Women in Tokyo are most in favour of having single-sex carriages on public transport, according to a poll in five of the world's biggest commuter cities released on Thursday, despite such policies face growing criticism. A Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of 1,000 female travellers in Tokyo, London, New York City, Cairo and Mexico City found less than half were in favour of women-only sections on trains and buses to boost safety. But nearly 70 percent of women in Tokyo backed single sex carriages that were introduced into the city in 2000 to combat a phenomenon commonly known as "chikan", or groping, on trains. More than half of women in the Japanese capital said safety was their top transport concern but seven in 10 were confident they could now travel without sexual harassment or violence. Music shows bring Christmas cheer to HCM City
A series of drama, music and dance shows featuring hundreds of singers, dancers and theatre artists offering something for everyone in HCM City will begin this weekend. Best pho chefs, brands honored at 2019 Day of Pho
The 2019 Day of Pho, the third edition of an annual Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper-backed program to honor the world-renowned food, has found out the top ten pho brands most loved by consumers in Vietnam and the country’s best pho chefs. December 12 was officially designated as the Day of Pho in celebration of Vietnam’s effective traditional dish in 2018, one year after the first ‘Pho Day,’ an initiative by Tuoi Tre, was held. Pho is a Vietnamese soup consisting of broth, rice noodles, fresh herbs, and beef. In celebration of the third Day of Pho, a competition was organized to search for the best pho makers in Vietnam. The contest was open to both local and foreign chefs who currently work at eateries, restaurants or hotels across the country, as well as non-professional cooks. Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and actress Julia Roberts are in Vietnam on behalf of the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance on a trip to spotlight girls’ education. The Obama Foundation is doing its first ‘Leaders: Asia-Pacific’ program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 10 to 14, bringing together 200 leaders from 33 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants, who come from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, will join plenary sessions, skill-building workshops, and leadership training in the inaugural program.
