Promoting communication toward the world Population Day BTO - This year's celebration of World Population Day (11/7), the Department of Population - Family Planning organized many activities focusing on boosting the tasks of communication in order to create a change and to raise all levels/branches/unions, and individuals' awareness of population work. The celebration of World Population Day is associated with the evaluation of the state of implementing the population and family planning in the past 6 months aiming to define future direction and missions. The Minister of Public Health on May 14 asked the General Department of Population to help immediately deploy five population and family planning missions in response to high national birth rates. The missions, headed by Deputy Ministers of Public Health, will begin their work in localities from May 20. According to a recent report by the ministry, the number of newborns in the first quarter of this year increased by 18,000, representing an increase of 7.2 percent year on year. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were among the 39 provinces and cities nationwide criticized for the highest birth rates. The capital city posted a newborn growth of 27.6 percent while the rate in the nation's southern hub reached 30.2 percent. The rate was 40 percent for northern Son La province and 41 percent for southern Soc Trang province. The provincial branch of population-family planning (PPFP) has just held a meeting to implement the media and propagating task of PPDF for the year 2013. The provincial Population and Family Planning Sub-Department on 19 March deployed a campaign of communicating, campaigning for, integrated with providing reproductive health - family planning service. The campaign is deployed in 124 communes of 12 districts, provincial towns, and city to have over 15,500 cases of IUD insertion (attaining 75% of the annual plan), 500 cases of contraceptive injection (60% of the yearly plan), and 75 cases of contraceptive transplantation (60% of the annual plan); 8,600 people taking contraceptive pills and more than 9,800 people using condoms, reaching 100% of the yearly plan. The news was published on December 5 in Ha Noi at a launching ceremony of the national action month on population and family planning and the traditional day of the Vietnamese population and family planning (December 26). GOPFP General Director Duong Quoc Trong said that the action month was themed "Effectively control of sex ratios for family happiness and national sustainable development."
