The People’s Court in Dong Thap Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta sentenced a woman to death and a man to life in prison for transporting 77 kilograms of narcotics in early 2021. Le Nguyen Thuy Vy, 29, hailing from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, received the death penalty, while Huynh Quoc Dat, 30, a Ho Chi Minh City resident, was handed a life sentence during their trial on Monday. They were both convicted of the illegal transportation of narcotics. In mid-2020, Vy arrived in Ho Chi Minh City and earned a living as a delivery worker, according to the indictment. Vy then met Le Thanh Quan, who had just finished serving his jail term for drug trafficking. The two became close, with Vy considering Quan as her older brother. Vietnam to repair Hanoi’s 120-year-old Long Bien Bridge
The Hanoi People’s Committee decided to establish a specialist team to support the repair and renovation of Long Bien Bridge because the structure has been seriously damaged over time. The team, comprising both Vietnamese and French experts, will be led by Do Viet Hai, deputy director of the municipal Department of Transport, to implement the Long Bien Bridge rehabilitation project financed by the French government. The team is in charge of collaborating with the French Embassy in Vietnam in studying the renovation of the bridge, detailing the project, and executing it in line with regulations. Completed in 1902, Hanoi’s historic and iconic Long Bien Bridge bears the wear and tear not only of time but also of thousands of vehicles that use it every day. 9 large trees in central district of Ho Chi Minh City chopped down
Ho Chi Minh City Greenery Parks Company Limited has cut down nine large trees on the streets around Ho Con Rua (Turtle Lake) in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 3, as they are at risk of being uprooted and pose danger to road users. Some of the trees are at the site for a subproject to upgrade sidewalks in the area, part of a broader project to upgrade Turtle Lake, but the company claimed that their removal was not related to the sidewalk renovation. The nine trees were chopped down as per permits issued by the municipal Department of Construction and the Infrastructure Management Center. Of the nine trees, two hopea odorata trees had rotten roots and seriously damaged trunks. Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is always crowded Duong Thi Thanh Thuy, living on Huynh Tan Phat Street in District 7 and a regular user of this street to go to work in District 1, shared that it normally takes her 20 minutes to get to work, but at rush hours the time could be a double or triple. Truck driver Le Van Lam, who usually uses the street to transport cargoes to and fro Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone, complained that Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is always crowded, regardless of the time of the day.
