Viet Nam News by Paul Kennedy May 14 1988 started out as a really good day. The sun was shining, I was 15-years-old and on my way to Wembley Stadium to watch Liverpool win the FA Cup. The result was a no brainer. Liverpool, the crème de la crème of English football versus Wimbledon. The Crazy Gang. Liverpool was a team packed with talent. Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton and Hansen. Wimbledon was a team packed with thugs, Vinnie Jones, Andy Thorn, Dennis Wise and some other players no one had ever heard of. Liverpool would win. They had to win, they were the better team. They could not possible lose. They lost. By one goal to nil. My dream day turned into a nightmare. The train journey back north was solemn to say the least. But you know what? Thirty plus years later, this final will still be remembered as one of the greatest in FA Cup history. Not because of the game itself, that was awful, but because it reminded the world of the beauty of the FA Cup. Fast forward to … [Read more...] about Klopp flops in the FA Cup but does it really matter?

Viet Nam News I remember well the first football match I ever went to. It was an FA Cup match at Anfield in 1981. I was eight-years-old. Liverpool won 4-1 with Kenny Dalglish scoring twice. The following year I was given a season ticket for a Christmas present, which I’m guessing cost my parents around VNĐ1million (US$44). I got the kit too, which again would have cost very little. This season if you want the full Manchester United kit of shirt, shorts and socks it will set you back VNĐ5million. Now I totally understand how times have changed, and on the whole, football has gotten much, much better. It’s far safer for one. Stadiums are much more comfortable and fans are for the large part treated with more respect instead of being herded in and out of grounds like cattle. But despite all these vast improvements, I am concerned about the future of the beautiful game. A few weeks ago, Villarreal announced they had signed former Arsenal midfielder Santi … [Read more...] about What is happening to the beautiful game?
Manchester City take on Chelsea in Sunday's Community Shield - the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season - but the Wembley showpiece will offer few clues as to the destination of the Premier League title. Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri speaks to the press ahead of the Community Shield match against Manchester City. (AFP/Daniel LEAL-OLIVAS) The glorified friendly between the league champions and the FA Cup winners has been a notoriously poor predictor of success in recent years - no winner has gone on to be crowned champions in the same season since Manchester United in 2010-11. The game, likely to be played in sizzling summer temperatures in London, is set to feature various youngsters and fringe players as World Cup stars ease their way back into club action. But whatever the line-ups, there are plenty of talking points and the game will be closely watched for clues as domestic football reclaims centre stage just three weeks after the World Cup final in Russia. … [Read more...] about Man City and Chelsea lock horns in Community Shield
Jose Mourinho has warned that Manchester United still face a battle to secure a top-four place in the Premier League despite their ambition to finish second. Mourinho warns Man Utd that top four isn't safe yet, AFP/File / Paul ELLIS Manchester City wrapped up the title without kicking a ball, thanks to rock-bottom West Brom's shock 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. United were a shadow of the side that stormed back to win the Manchester derby the previous weekend, with manager Mourinho saying he would drop floundering stars for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham. Before that trip to Wembley comes Wednesday's league match at Bournemouth, which takes on extra significance following the loss to the beleaguered Baggies. United can use their game in hand to stretch their lead over third-place Liverpool to four points and all but seal Champions League qualification, which Mourinho believes is up in the air as fifth-placed Chelsea look to build on their victory against … [Read more...] about Mourinho warns Man Utd that top four isn’t safe yet
Leicester City's Premier League title dream became reality on Monday when one of the greatest sporting fairytales reached its conclusion in west London where chasing Tottenham Hotspur were held 2-2 by Chelsea. The result provoked an outpouring of celebration in the provincial English city and as far away as Thailand and Japan, while Leicester's players had watched nervously on television along with Foxes fans packed into local bars 160km away. Goals from Tottenham's Harry Kane and Son Heung-min had looked like extending the title race to the penultimate week of what has been an unforgettable season. But Gary Cahill gave Chelsea a lifeline before the hour and Eden Hazard, whose goals helped the Blues win the title last year, curled in a superb 83rd-minute equaliser to deflate Spurs and confirm Leicester as champions for the first time. As tempers flared at the end of a red-hot London derby at Stamford Bridge, television pictures cut away to Leicester's players celebrating in the … [Read more...] about Amazing Leicester celebrate fairytale title success
