Vietnamese woman produces reusable sanitary napkins to protect environment

A young Vietnamese woman has initiated a project that manufactures reusable sanitary pads in an effort to reduce the amount of garbage dumped every day. Bui Thi Minh Ngoc established a project called Green Lady Vietnam in 2017 that has produced cloth menstrual pads – items that have started to be used in America, Europe, India, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam’s neighbors Cambodia, the Philippines and Thailand. “An average woman uses up to 10,000 disposable sanitary towels during her entire life. But a standard sanitary towel decomposes as slowly as four plastic bags,” Ngoc, 25, said. She was motivated by the desire to offer sanitary pads made completely of cloth that are tailored to Vietnamese women. Often working ten to twelve hours a day, she has spent a large part of her time being employed full-time and devoting several hours of the day to plans to develop her own business. She had a hard time finding suitable cloth for eco-friendly, safe sanitary napkins. “The fabric has to be naturally made, absorbent, easily washable and quick-drying,” she said. She traveled to cloth-making villages on the outskirts of Hanoi in the hope of getting good enough fabric but the effort failed. Her mother, who has enthusiastically supported her, came to the daughter’s rescue by buying the material she needs and finding workers for the Green Lady Vietnam project. Ngoc’s decision to embark on the undertaking encountered dissuasion from a number of friends and people with knowledge of the menstrual napkin industry. “Many people told me cloth sanitary pads are a backward step away from modern life, as they cause inconvenience and would hardly sell well,” she recalled. She has remained undaunted although she was at times uncertain about whether expanding the project would generate any success. She found a way out by maintaining sanitary pad production while running courses on eco-friendly …

Ministry of Health task force leaves Danang as virus outbreak is ”under control”

Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son and a special task force that helped Danang tackle Covid-19 left the city on Friday as the virus outbreak was brought under control. Some members of the Ministry of Health task force take photo before leaving Danang City. For more than 20 days in the city, the force helped speed up its coronavirus test, track and trace and treatment efforts in a bid to stop the spread of infection in the community. The city also received constructive suggestions from the force to respond to the resurgence of the virus, including reimposing social distancing restrictions on the city and the disinfection of the C and Danang General hospitals so that the medical facilities could come back on-stream in treating non-Covid-19 patients suffering from other serious diseases from the city and neighbouring localities. The taskforce also assisted in the setting up of some makeshift hospitals and some special units at the hospitals as well as at the Lung Hospital to treat critically-ill Covid-19 patients who also suffer from various other diseases. Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son discusses with doctors in Danang on the treatment for Covid-19 patients. Medical experts and doctors from some hospitals in Hanoi and HCM City also came and helped treat patients and shared experiences with health workers in Danang, and the neighbouring localities of Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai. The task force meets with members of the Quang Nam Provincial Department of Health about the Covid-19 situation in the province. Speaking at the farewell meeting with the forces held on August 20, on behalf of the city leaders and locals, Danang People’s Committee Chairman Huynh Duc Tho expressed his deep gratitude to the Ministry of Health's Covid-19 special taskforce, especially Deputy Minister Son, for their dedication and valuable support for Danang to help it eliminate the coronavirus. Before leaving the city, Deputy …

‘Help, 40 days here’: Photos show migrants crammed into U.S. border facilities

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK -- Government investigators warned of dangerous overcrowding at more migrant facilities on the southwest U.S. border, publishing photos on Tuesday of packed cells in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley where some children have no access to showers or hot meals. A report issued by investigators for the Department of Homeland Security said supervisors raised concerns for the health and safety of detainees and agents, warning that the overcrowding represented a “ticking time bomb.” The DHS watchdog issued the report after June visits to five U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency facilities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) sector, the busiest area of the border for migrant arrests. It came as President Donald Trump’s administration pushed back against criticism of its migrant detention centers on the U.S.-Mexico border. Conditions at the centers have been a flashpoint since May when the watchdog warned of similar conditions at facilities in the El Paso, Texas sector, west of the Rio Grande Valley, with migrants held for weeks instead of days, and adults kept in cells with standing room only. Security incidents among men at RGV facilities included detainees clogging toilets in order to be released from cells, migrants refusing to return to cells, and special operations teams brought in to show that Border Patrol was prepared to use force, the report on Tuesday said. Migrants banged on cell windows and shouted when investigators visited. Most single adults had not had a shower despite several being held as long as a month. One photo showed a man in a cell with 88 men, that was built to hold 41, holding a message reading: “Help 40 Day(s) Here.” The watchdog’s report recommended CBP accelerate transfer of single adults to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency responsible for long-term migrant detention. Border Patrol stations have been overwhelmed after migrant apprehensions hit a 13-year high in May …
