In early 2016, a book street was established in downtown Ho Chi Minh City in order to encourage citizens, especially youngsters, to read. The street, located on Nguyen Van Binh Street in District 1, is meant to nurture a reading culture through various activities and highlight the value and significance of books. Some foreigners have shared their point of view on the importance of reading, as well as their personal experience to encourage their children to fall in love with books. HCMC proposes to demolish 14 old apartment blocks The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction proposed to tear down 14 old apartment blocks within the next five years at conference hosted by the Ministry of Construction in the city yesterday. HCMC has nearly 450 apartment blocks built before 1975. Most of them have the occupancy rate of only 30 percent and 12 blocks are estimated to be dangerous including 11 Vo Van Tan in District 3 and 6bis Nguyen Tat Thanh in District 4, the department reported. The conference was hosted to popularize the Prime Minister's Directive 05 on reviewing and estimating the structural safety of old housing and public works in urban areas. According to the directive, cities and provinces must complete the review and estimation by the end of this year. Traffic sector declares hotlines The National Traffic Safety Committee has declared 10 hotlines that residents can call to report information on transport and traffic safety during this year's new year festival. Residents can call the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam at 0916908085, 0913432383 and 0917908085, or leaders of the Ministry of Transport at 0912379753, 0903474737 and 0913209741. The hotlines of the National Traffic Safety Committee include 0989088719, 0917577777 and 0995918666. To contact the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, residents can call 06942608. Reports at a conference show that people have paid much attention to preserving and promoting ethnic languages and scripts, and that both are becoming more popular. Vietnam has 53 ethnic minority groups comprising 13 million people and accounting for 13.8% of the population. Each group has its own language and script. In general, ethnic languages in Vietnam do not develop equitably. Popular languages of the Tay, Thai, Muong and Ede ethnic groups have become regional languages, whilst other ethnic languages, like those of the Roman, Brau and Odu are becoming lost. .
