Vietnam sees 20.7 percent drop in poverty levels According to the World Bank Poverty Assessment 2012 report based on new standards, the poverty rate in Vietnam has fallen from 58 percent to 20.7 percent in the past twenty years. Impoverished households were mainly in northwest and northeast mountainous regions and some highland provinces, while middle and rich households were in Hong River Delta, southeast region, and coastal cities. As for urban areas, although poverty rate is low, residents have to face rising costs of living and many citizens work in unofficial sectors or are unemployed and do not have social welfare. Under the new standards, the poverty line is VND653,000 per person per month(US$2.25). Foreign investors have a clearer view of the commodities and related activities they can trade and engage in, after the Ministry of Trade issued a much-anticipated decision last week. Decision 10/2007/QD-BTM clarifies the forms of investment open to foreigners in the trade sector, provides commodity lists that comply with the harmonised system (HS) and gives a roadmap for the implementation of commodity trading activities, export rights, import rights and distribution rights. "Although the commitments can be found in the WTO agreements and commitments, the decision provides summaries and details in an easily readable format. Women in NA offices falls in a decade
HA NOI -- The number of women working for the National Assembly (NA) in Viet Nam has declined in the past ten years, proven by its falling to 44th in the world rankings, according to a United Nations Development Programme study released yesterday. Speaking at the launch of the study, UN Resident Co-ordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Pratibha Mehta said that in 1997, Viet Nam ranked amongst the top ten countries with the highest number of women in parliament in the world.
