Buddhists pray online due to COVID-19 outbreak Blood shortage warned as donations postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks The resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic in many cities and provinces in recent weeks has seriously affected the blood supply for medical treatment. Although many people and organisations responded to the call of blood donation by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) on February 19, the amount of blood received per day was still only a few hundred units while the average need for treatment each day is from 1,200 to 1,500 units. There is usually a shortage of blood during the Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday as the holiday lasts long while blood has a short shelf life and many patients still need blood transfusions during Tết. This year, the pandemic's resurgence has made the shortage after Tết even worse. Before Tết, 30 entities requested to postpone or cancel blood donation plans which meant the NIHBT missed out on receiving more than 8,000 units. After the holiday, the institute received information about the delay of 24 more blood donation plans from now to the end of March with an expected donation of 5,000 units. In addition, the blood donation schedule in March cannot be confirmed because it depends on the university and college's return to the school schedule. This means the blood reserves of the institute are decreasing. If this situation continues, blood reserves will decrease to an alarming threshold, fell into a state of scarcity and seriously affect the blood supply to health facilities. The Institute’s director Bạch Quốc Khánh said: “The estimated blood demand for emergency and treatment in February and March of the institute is about 50,000 units.” “With blood donation schedules maintained up to now, there was still a shortage of about 20,000 units, seriously affecting the provision of 177 medical facilities in 28 provinces and cities in the north with about 41 million …

The note was sent to the head of the department doctor Nguyễn Văn Hải and other medial workers. “Everyone was so nice to me,” Hằng said, adding that her pain seemed relieved much when a nurse told her that: “I will take your blood for testing. Please tell me if it hurts!” Doctor Hải carefully explained her health problems, recommended possible treatment options and encouraged her a lot in a very gentle manner, Hằng said. “We patients feel at home when staying at the hospital. The doctors and nurses treat us as if they were our family members,” Hằng wrote. Hải said that he received a lot of thank-you notes and letters from patients like Hằng, which inspired him and made him confident in his career choice. “A doctor not only treats people but also encourages them, reassures them and helps them stay strong during their illness,” Hải said. Hải is known as one of the very first doctors who introduced the laparoscopy technique in the northern mountainous province of Lào Cai. “I am very interested in laparoscopy with its significant outstanding advantages,” he said, adding that he was lucky to attend training classes on laparoscopy offered by leading doctors in Việt Nam. With his understanding of laparoscopy, he has launched many initiatives to apply laparoscopy techniques in his hospital which is located in a disadvantaged area in Việt Nam. People living in mountainous areas with modest infrastructure development, particularly in transportation, lacked access to medical advances, Hải said. In many cases when laparoscopy could help solve patients’ health problems easily, due to a shortage of medical …

Land brokers rush to Binh Phuoc although airport project still being mooted The Saigon Times A piece of paper with an advertisement to sell land near the projected airport site in Binh Phuoc Province. Land brokers have rushed to Binh Phuoc’s Hon Quan District and inflated the land prices although the airport project remains on paper - PHOTO: TNO HCMC – Although an airport project has only been proposed in Hon Quan District of Binh Phuoc Province and is still being considered by the competent agencies, a large number of land brokers have rushed to the district and inflated the prices of land lots in surrounding areas. Over the last week, land brokers from HCMC, Hanoi and the neighboring localities of Binh Phuoc flocked to Hon Quan. Besides posting advertisements on social networks, they also took land buyers to visit the site proposed for the development of the airport, the local media reported. They have advertised land lots measuring some 1,000 square meters each and put up them for sale at VND700-900 million each. They have also said that only a small number of people could buy the land. According to the Hon Quan District government, the land price inflation and large gatherings of people are abnormal, posing a high risk of social disorder and Covid-19 infection. The land price inflation may encourage local residents, especially the ethnic minority people, to sell agricultural land. Therefore, the competent agencies have been educating residents so that they are not tricked by land brokers who spread false information. Due to the complicated situation, on February 26, the government of Hon Quan District asked the police and military forces to support communes in the district to handle large gatherings and those without face masks to prevent the Covid-19 infection, especially in the surrounding areas of the proposed airport site. The authorities of communes and towns, especially Tan Loi and An Khuong communes, were asked to enhance the …
