PANO - A ceremony to break ground for NguyenDuyHieuBoardingJunior High School was held on May 27th in Nam Tra Commune, Nui Thanh, Quang Nam by representatives of the People's Army Newspaper, the Vietnam Assistance for the Handicapped (VNAH) and local officials. The cost of the school is US$ 60,000 funded by Nippon Foundation/AEFA (Japan) and HeathEd (USA). According to investors and local officials, 6 classrooms and other education and training facilities will be built in the school that will enroll children of local ethnic minorities. At the ceremony, President of VNAH, Tran Van Ca, announced that the organisation will fund lunches for the students as well as books and computers for the school. VNAH also gave 200 gifts to local children on the occasion. Fifty photos depicting Vietnam’s landscapes, people and culture will be displayed at an exhibition titled “Beautiful Vietnam” in Houston, Texas, USA form April 25 to 28. Nguyen Viet Thanh and Hoang Hai Thinh are called “photo friends” because they were always together during business trips. They also share points of view in photography. However, at the upcoming photo exhibitions in the US, the two friends will introduce photos of two different trends. If Viet Thanh’s photos focus on the daily life, Hai Thinh’s works feature landscapes and people as well as culture of Vietnamese people. Viet Thanh has won many prizes at domestic and international photo contests. This is the fourth time his photos being displayed in the US while it is the first time of Hai Thinh. Hanoi to host int'l conference on geological parks Around 350 delegates will attend the second international conference on geological parks in the Asia-Pacific region to be held in Hanoi from July 16-24. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) Nguyen Linh Ngoc said that the ministry's decision to organise the event shows Vietnam's support for the UNESCO initiative to develop and preserve geological parks around the world. "The Colours of Vietnam" shines in US The event is a cultural exchange organized by the Vietnamese embassy in the US to commemorate the 67th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2). The paintings on display represent a wide range of styles and media, from traditional techniques such as lacquer and oil on canvas, to unique materials like rice bags. The 30 paintings by seven artists depict Vietnam from its struggle for national independence to its current stage of development, offering the American audience a broad view of daily life in the country including family love, beautiful Vietnamese women in ao dai (traditional long dress) and changes in the capital city of Hanoi.
