Four dead, two missing in aftermath of Storm 'Nari' Four people are reported dead, two still missing and dozens injured cross the Central Provinces from night of October 14 until the morning of October 15, with Storm 'Nari' lashing at wind speeds of level 14-15. The Storm destroyed houses, uprooted trees, flattened electric poles along streets and left untold devastation behind. The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control in the Central Provinces and Central Highlands announced the human casualties took place in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces. Rainfall upto 150-300mm caused flooding in many parts of the Central Provinces and Northern Central Highlands, including Ly Son Islands (Quang Ngai), Bach Ma (Hue), Tam Ky (Quang Nam). UK continues to fund innovative and pro-poor business ideas
(CPV) - The Vietnam Business Challenge Fund (VBCF) program on October 2 officially announced its decision to award close to USD2.5 million as a non-refundable investment to the best eight innovative and inclusive business models in the areas of agriculture, low carbon growth, infrastructure and basic services, as a result of the first call for proposals in November last year. UK: Huge strides but more efforts needed from Vietnamese government
The UK has commended Vietnam's strong development in the face of global downturn but warned that more efforts would still be needed. A Consultative Group Meeting being held from December 7-8 in Hanoi addressed the current state of development in Vietnam. At this meeting, the UK Government also expressed their hope to know more information from the Vietnamese Government in three particular areas which are macro-economic management, poverty reduction - social protection, and better governance. Regarding macro-economic management, the UK Government said it would encourage the Government of Vietnam to take concrete steps to fight inflation and restore macro-economic stability, such as tightening monetary and fiscal policies, adopting a more flexible exchange rate system, and releasing quality and timely data. A journalism network, initiated by the UK's ActionAid International was launched in Hanoi Friday, aiming to unite local journalists in the fight against poverty in Vietnam. The system involves volunteer journalists who wish to contribute to poverty alleviation and improvement of living conditions well as to raise the awareness of people from all walks of life about development issues facing the country. First Korean-language newspaper hits shelves The Vietnam-Korea Times - Viet Nam's first Korean language newspaper made its debut in Ha Noi yesterday, June 18. It is a collaboration between Vietnam Pictorial, a Viet Nam News Agency (VNA) publication, and a newspaper for the Republic of Korea's (RoK) overseas citizens. The paper aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries by serving as a bridge for mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.
