Delta provinces take steps to control saltwater intrusion

(Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Authorities in provinces in the Mekong Delta and Can Tho city are dredging irrigation works and storing fresh water to cope with saltwater intrusion during the dry season. Saltwater intrusion is expected to be more severe this year because of low flooding levels and lower than usual rainfall during the rainy season, according to local authorities. During the dry season, saline intrusion will occur earlier than usual, causing a shortage of fresh water for agricultural production, according to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research. Thua Thien – Hue to run 2.3 million EUR climate project

The project costs about 2.3 million EUR. Of the sum, 2 million EUR is sourced from the Luxembourg government’s non-refundable aid via the Global Climate Partnership Fund, while the remaining comes from the local budget. The project will be carried out in 30 months in 29 communes in Quang Dien, Phu Vang, and Phu Loc districts, aiming to enhance local capacity to respond to climate change. Its first component, “capacity”, focuses on raising public awareness of climate change response. Binh Thuan makes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Illustrative image (Source: VNA) Binh Thuan (VNA) – The south central coastal province of Binh Thuan is implementing the United Nations’ “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” (UN-REDD) project funded by the Norwegian Government in 41 communes of seven districts. The project is expected to bring other benefits to the province such as reducing poverty reduction, restructuring the forestry sector, and conserving biodiversity, heard a conference held on December 27 by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2014, Binh Thuan was one of the six provinces nationwide selected to carry out the second phrase of the programme. Sharp rise in January exports of cement and clinker
The country’s exports of cement and clinker bore out respective increases of 121% in volume and 112% in value compared to the same period last year, reaching 2.9 million tons, valued at US$101.12 million. The export price of cement and clinker in January dropped by 4.6% against December 2017, to an average of US$34.8 per ton. Bangladesh remains the largest of the 12 major consumers of Vietnam’s cement and clinker products, accounting for 31.3% of the country’s total exports, trailed by the Philippines. Cement and clinker exports to nearly all foreign markets in January witnessed a rise against last year’s corresponding period.
