Industrial property market slumps on economic woes
In the first quarter the industrial property occupancy rate in the south declined by 8 percentage points year-on-year, according to real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield. The rates declined by 11 and 9 percentage points for ready-built factories and warehouses, it added. Another consultancy, JLL, said there are signs that the southern industrial property market is going into a short-term low demand period since exports are down. The Vietnam Association of Realtors (VARS) said the market is suffering due to delays in clearing lands for many projects. The lack of accommodation for workers at industrial zones is also a weak spot, it added. With dwindling global economic prospects, foreign investors are keeping away. In the first five months of 2023 foreign direct investment pledge in Vietnam was 7% lower at $10.86 billion. VARS said it is vital that investors are aware of the government’s policies to be able to invest optimally. Industrial land development … [Read more...] about Industrial property market slumps on economic woes
Vietnam PM exhorts nation to save power
In a directive released Thursday on electricity saving, he warns that the power situation is challenging now and will remain so in the coming years with demand increasing. Economical and efficient use of electricity is the solution to ensuring energy security, the directive says. People should use energy-efficient electrical equipment, switch off electrical devices when leaving the room, only use air conditioners when absolutely necessary but setting them at not less than 26 degrees Celsius. People should avoid using incandescent light bulbs and install rooftop solar power systems. The country should reduce electricity use by 2% a year and power losses in transmission lines to less than 6% by 2025. By 2030 at least 50% of all office and residential buildings should use rooftop solar power. Only LED bulbs should be used in street lights by 2025. To achieve the goals, government agencies must coordinate with local power companies to develop electricity saving plans and … [Read more...] about Vietnam PM exhorts nation to save power
Sluggish home demand recorded in HCMC
A total 138 apartments were sold directly from the developers last month in HCMC and the neighboring province of Binh Duong, down 98%, even though 390 new apartments were introduced to the market, according to data from property services company DKRA Group. Five houses were sold during the period in HCMC and the neighboring provinces, down 99% year-on-year, it added. Although many developers last month offered discounts of 15-18% on property products and other loan interest incentives, few people showed interests in making purchases. The lack of customers and declining liquidity began last year and continued to show this year, according to the Vietnam Association of Realtors. Personal financial difficulties amid unfavorable economic factors are the main reason for the low demand, it said, adding that high interest rates discourage homebuyers from making purchases and they instead prefer to keep their money in the bank. Vo Hong Thang, deputy director of R&D DKRA Group, … [Read more...] about Sluggish home demand recorded in HCMC
City can party like it’s 1999
Maybe it’s a sure sign of getting old, but in my mind, the year 1999 doesn’t seem that far back. I was working in Liverpool, England, as Chief Reporter for the evening newspaper, and I’d get my kicks on the train journey into the office by playing ‘snake’ on my latest Nokia phone. Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer celebrates scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final - Photo AFP Photo The Millennium Bug was all everyone was talking about, and there was a genuine concern that at the stroke of midnight on December 31, 1999, the world was likely to implode. FYI – it never. The fabulous Prince song, 1999, released bizarrely in 1982, was, for obvious reasons, played constantly on the radio, and people actually listened to radios. Vauxhall had just brought out their new and improved version of the Vectra and the euro currency was launched with England saying a firm ‘thanks but no thanks’. In June of 1999, Manchester United manager Alex … [Read more...] about City can party like it’s 1999

Sushi belt purveyor sues teenage viral vandal
Suhiro filed the suit seeking 67 million yen (around $480,000) in compensation at a local court in the city of Osaka, court documents showed on Thursday, according to the Bangkok Post . According to the complaint, the boy, whose name has been withheld, licked an open soy sauce bottle and an unused teacup before touching a sushi plate on the running conveyor belt with his saliva-covered finger during a visit to a Sushiro outlet on January 3. He went even further when he uploaded a 45-second video of the process to a social media account on January 29. The boy’s lawyer said his client could not be held responsible for Sushiro’s losses, citing the robust sushi restaurant rivalries in the country and the fact that the video was only intended to be share among the boy’s circle of friends, instead of publicly. Established in 1984, Sushiro is now serving diner throughout Japan as well as internationally in China, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. … [Read more...] about Sushi belt purveyor sues teenage viral vandal
Blinken to be in Beijing for talks on June 18: US official
Reuters reported on Wednesday that Blinken would travel to China in the coming weeks, citing an official who spoke on condition of anonymity. An official on Friday said Blinken would be in Beijing on June 18, but gave no other details. In February, Washington'stop diplomat scrapped a planned tripto Beijing, which would have been the first by a U.S. secretary of state in five years, over a suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States. Washington has been keen to reschedule the trip, and the timing emerged after the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that China has reached a secret deal with Cuba to establish an electronic eavesdropping facility on the island roughly 100 miles (160 km) from Florida. The spokesperson for the White House National Security Council on Thursday said the report was not accurate, while saying that Washington has had "real concerns" about China’s relationship with Cuba and was closely monitoring it. The State Department, … [Read more...] about Blinken to be in Beijing for talks on June 18: US official
My mother-in-law is destroying my life
My husband and I have been married for 12 years, with an 11-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. The first two years we lived by ourselves, everyone was happy. But then it took a turn for the worse when my mother-in-law moved in. She used to live with her youngest daughter, who was still single. My father-in-law passed away a long time ago, so the plot of land that belonged to my husband’s family was passed down to his mother, we built a house on that land. When it comes to my mother-in-law, the most common opinion of myself, relatives, and people who know her is that she was a lazy, dirty, and stingy woman who loves to stick her nose in where it doesn’t belong. She has never bothered interacting with me or her grandkids. When she moved in with us, our eldest was only a few months old, so we needed her help babysitting. She used every excuse possible, such as feeling too tired or painful (she was only 52) to avoid helping. I had to send my child to someone else in the … [Read more...] about My mother-in-law is destroying my life
