The latest move from the Fed marked eight consecutive rate hikes since March 2022, with no signs that it has reached the peak of its hike journey. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Trong Thinh, a financial expert from the Vietnam Association of Financial Advisers, predicted that a rate hike of 25 percentage points was anticipated. Thinh stated that, in general, the pressure on the USD/VND exchange rate from the Fed’s interest rate hike is not significant. Pressure on to support new economic growth, photo Le Toan Dr. Le Dang Doanh, former head of the Central Institute for Economic Management, also believes that the Fed’s interest rate rise is targeted to contain inflation in the US, since inflation has begun to fall from the previous year’s low level. The USD price will adjust as a result. “A change in the price will influence the exchange rate between it and VND, impacting import-export businesses and foreign-invested enterprises,” said Doanh. Vietnam faces inflationary pressure in 2023: expert
Inflationary pressure for Vietnam's economy in 2023 is high and comes from many factors, he said in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA). The demand-pull and cost-push inflation will put pressure on the country's efforts to control inflation amid surging demand and strengthening of the U.S. dollar which yields increased import prices. Demand for petrol and electricity – the two important commodities for production and consumption – will increase in 2023. The domestic electricity price has been kept unchanged for the past few years, while the price of coal and gas used in the production of electricity has increased, he said, noting that thermal and gas power account for a large proportion of the total generated electricity. Therefore, it is forecasted that the Government may raise the price of electricity this year. A hike in electricity prices will put pressure on inflation by increasing production costs and consumer spending, and at the same time reducing economic … [Read more...] about Vietnam faces inflationary pressure in 2023: expert
Chinese visitors to Vietnam to reach 3-4.5 million in 2023: HSBC
HSBC predicted in its latest report on Vietnam’s economy that the Southeast Asian country will see a recovery of the number of Chinese visitors by 50-80 percent in 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic volume. In other words, Vietnam is set to welcome three to 4.5 million Chinese tourists this year. The increasing return of Chinese tourists following China’s border reopening on January 8 will notably contribute to the growth of Vietnam’s tourism, which can be a key sector for the latter in 2023, offsetting the decline in trading and manufacturing, according to HSBC experts. In a broader view, the experts believe that the Vietnamese economy will witness a shift from goods to services, which they consider a driver for economic stability despite the trade slowdown. Red represents Chinese tourists as a percentage of the total number of international visitors to countries in Southeast Asia. After Vietnam resumed inbound and outbound tourism in March 2022, its domestic … [Read more...] about Chinese visitors to Vietnam to reach 3-4.5 million in 2023: HSBC

The quake, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. "We were shaken like a cradle. There were nine of us at home. Two sons of mine are still in the rubble, I'm waiting for them," said a woman with a broken arm and injuries to her face, speaking in an ambulance near the wreckage of a seven-storey block where she had lived in Diyarbakir in Turkey. "I have never felt anything like it in the 40 years I've lived," said Erdem, a resident of the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the quake's epicentre, who declined to give his surname. "We were shaken at least three times very strongly." Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said 284 people were killed and 2,323 injured, as authorities scrambled rescue teams and supply aircraft for the affected area, while declaring a "level 4 alarm" that calls for international assistance. Exploring the aspects of global gold performance
Dat Tong, Senior market strategist, Exness With financial turmoil on the rise around the world, many traders are looking to gold as a safe-haven asset. Gold has been on the rise lately, approaching its all-time high in August 2020 (see chart). The 2009 recession boosted gold trading volume and by 2011, XAUUSD reached a high level at $1,823. As world economies recovered, fiat currencies regained strength and gold prices fell throughout 2013-2014. The downtrend bottomed out at $1,061 in 2015, before starting to ascend. Gold prices rebounded in 2019 as the pandemic ravaged countries, reaching $1,974. Is gold still a safe-haven asset? During difficult economic times, gold price tends to increase.
