Devastated by mom’s death, Vietnamese girl bites bullet to take national exam

Nguyen Thuy Linh started sitting for Vietnam’s national high school exam this week with too much weight on her shoulders - the overwhelming grief from her mother’s death and the motherhood she has to take over from the deceased. But the 18-year-old girl, hailing from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, said taking, and ultimately passing, this exam is the only opportunity for her to escape poverty. Students in Vietnam on Tuesday started sitting for the all-important national high school exam, the results of which are used to determine if a student qualifies for high school graduation and as an admission test for colleges and universities. The exam runs from June 25 to 27 this year. Linh had been painstakingly preparing for the four-day exam like any of her peers, when her mother, 41-year-old Trinh Thi Khuyen, was struck to death by a lightning bolt earlier this month. The incident took place when the mother and Linh were on their way home after a hard day working in the paddy field on June 3. Khuyen was taken to the hospital for emergency care, but she passed away on June 5. Following her monther's sudden death, Linh took over the role of a mom to her younger siblings - three sisters and a four-month-old brother. The young girl also has to take care of her grandmother and father, and the seven-member family now live in a shabby house where it is always hot as fire. Photo: Ha Dong / Tuoi Tre As the mother earned half of the family's income, life became harder for them after her death. The father, Nguyen Van Tuan, 46, had to quit his job as a truck driver in Hanoi to go back to his hometown and take care of the farming work previously done by his wife, while Linh handles all housework in the family now. Even if she passes the national high school exam and is admitted to college, her …

Trial of man charged with murdering Vietnamese girl in Japan to start in June

The trial of a Japanese man accused of killing a 9-year-old Vietnamese girl will start in three months time, a Japanese court said on Monday. Yasumasa Shibuya, 46, has been charged with murder and abandoning the girl’s body, the Chiba District Court said, as cited by Japanese media reports. Prosecutors allege that Shibuya strangled the third-grader to death and left her body near a drainage ditch after abducting her on the morning of March 24, 2017, the Japan Times reported. Shibuya has refused to speak since his arrest in April, it said. Media reports did not mention rape charges, although autopsy results suggested the girl had been sexually abused. The victim, Le Thi Nhat Linh, went missing after she left home for school in Matsudo City, one hour northeast of Tokyo, on March 24. Her body was discovered two days later. Shibuya was her neighbor and head of the parents’ association at her school at the time. The case had shocked both the Japanese and Vietnamese public. Linh’s parents have been gathering tens of thousands of signatures from both countries, hoping that public pressure will prompt prosecutors to call for Shibuya to be sentenced to death. In Japan, murder can be punished with death sentence and executions are carried out by hanging. The punishment is usually imposed in cases of multiple murders, though some single murderers have also been hanged when their crime was considered serious. …

12-year-old girl allegedly tortured by mother, raped by latter’s boyfriend in Hanoi

A Hanoi woman has been probed for torturing her own daughter, while her boyfriend investigated for raping the young girl. Police in Ha Dong District, Hanoi on Sunday arrested and initiated legal proceedings against Hoang Thi Thu Huyen, 34, for torturing her daughter and Pham Thanh Tung, 31, for raping an under-16-year-old person. The arrest was previously approved by the Ha Dong District People’s Procuracy. Tung was taken into custody for four months to facilitate the investigation, while Huyen was released on bail to be able to raise her young child. The woman was also indicted for illegal trade of narcotics in a separate case. According to preliminary information, Huyen lives with her 12-year-old daughter H.H.B. and a younger son at their home in Ha Dong District. Tung is Huyen’s boyfriend and has stayed at Huyen’s place since early 2020. The two recently had a son, who is currently about one month old. Police officers probe the house of Hoang Thi Thu Huyen in Ha Dong District, Hanoi. Photo : Danh Trong / Tuoi Tre From May 2020 to January 2021, Tung forced B. to have sex with him on multiple occasions when Huyen was not at home. The man threatened to beat the young girl if she tried to resist or tell other people. B. also said her mother often hit her with water pipes, electric wires, or bamboo sticks whenever she was disobedient. Huyen was aware that B. was raped by Tung, but that was just another reason for her to continue torturing B., the victim stated. On January 25, B.’s aunt acknowledged the incidents and decided to take B. and her younger stepbrother home for further care. The case was also reported to police officers. According to B.’s aunt, Huyen has had five children with five different men. She was only legally married to the first man. Further investigation is ongoing.
