Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI - Deputy Prime Minister Trịnh Đình Dũng has asked for prompt inspection of reported waste dumping by the Hưng Hiệp Formosa Hà Tĩnh Steel Company, Vietnam News Agency reported yesterday. The request was made following recent news stories alleging that the company was found burying a huge amount of waste at a farm run by the director of an environmental company in Kỳ Anh town of central Hà Tĩnh Province. Dũng urged the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) to co-ordinate with the provincial People's Committee to check the information. If it is true, measures should be taken to strictly address the case following legal regulations. The outcomes of the inspection must be reported to the Prime Minister, he added. IZ businesses dump waste water (08-11-2008) HA NOI — Many businesses in Tan Phu Trung Industrial Zone in Cu Chi District, 40km northwest of HCM City, have been caught dumping untreated waste water into the Thay Cai canal, according to the municipal People's Council. Only 28 out of the 48 businesses operating in the zone have waste treatment facilities, but even treated waste water does not yet meet the environmental protection standards, said Le Van Thanh, director of the Sai Gon Tay Bac company, which owns the industrial zone. Meanwhile, waste treatment facilities were not running regularly at some businesses, he said. The majority of businesses produce rubber, paper, chemicals or dye. The 'Vedan story' attracted public attention last year after inspectors revealed the Dong Nai-based company had been releasing toxic, untreated wastewater directly into the river for more than 14 years. Farmers from Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, where the 80km river runs through, blamed local authorities for allowing the pollution without forcing the firm to pay compensation to them. Research by Ho Chi Minh City-based National University scientists shows that Vedan dumped 3,500-4,500 cubic meters of waste into the Thi Vai River in southern Dong Nai Province each day, contributing 90 percent of the river's pollution. Environment Crime Prevention Police in the southern province of Dong Nai caught two tanker trucks belonging to Metro Cash & Carry Supermarket while they were dumping waste near a residential area in Tan Phong Ward in Bien Hoa City. Two drivers named Luu Ba Ngoc and Do Quang Duy told the police that they were transporting waste from Metro Cash & Carry Supermarket in Bien Hoa City. Police officials then met with Pham Quang Binh, manager of Metro Bien Hoa, as well as Vo Dinh Thao and Do Thanh Tam from the maintenance division of the supermarket to clarify the issue. Tam said that on January 25, Metro Bien Hoa destroyed five cartons of expired shampoo and shower cream by pouring the liquid into the wastewater treatment plant of the supermarket, causing wastewater to overflow outside.
