Empowering Vietnam’s energy transition
What is your impression of Vietnam’s young but energy-hungry market, and what are its most critical issues? With over 30 years of operation in Vietnam, GE has made significant contributions to the country's development. Vietnam holds strategic importance as a market, and we are proud to witness its progress. A key challenge lies in ensuring dispatchable energy, the ability to generate and deliver energy as needed. GE's energy consulting services play a vital role in addressing this challenge by optimising the dispatchability of energy resources. Working closely with grid operators, these services identify effective strategies for energy dispatch, including integrating renewable sources, optimising network planning, and ensuring a reliable electricity supply. Furthermore, energy financial services can facilitate financing and investments that enhance grid dispatchability. By strategically supporting projects that contribute to a more reliable and flexible energy system, these … [Read more...] about Empowering Vietnam’s energy transition
Europe hits resistance in race to finalise green laws
Increased political resistance to new EU laws to protect the environment has left the European Commission fighting to keep intact its vision for Europe's green transition. Ahead of elections in the European Parliament in June next year, the European Union is racing to finish legislation that includes two landmark nature bills - binding targets for countries to restore damaged natural habitats and a goal to halve chemical pesticide use by 2030. Much EU environment legislation has been passed over the last two years, but the appetite on the part of some lawmakers and member states for more is waning and farming groups say further change must be conditional on more financial support. Brussels proposed the nature measures last June. Opposition has mounted in recent weeks, as EU countries and lawmakers prepare for the final negotiations. The European Parliament's biggest group, the European People's Party, has called for the nature law to be scrapped saying it would hurt farmers. … [Read more...] about Europe hits resistance in race to finalise green laws

Climate: ‘dangerous heat’ could afflict billions by 2100
Current policies to limit global warming will expose more than a fifth of humanity to extreme and potentially life-threatening heat by century's end, researchers warned Monday. Earth's surface temperature is on track to rise 2.7 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, pushing more than two billion people -- 22 percent of projected global population -- well outside the climate comfort zone that has allowed our species to thrive for millennia, the scientists reported in Nature Sustainability. The countries with the highest number of people facing deadly heat in this scenario are India (600 million), Nigeria (300 million), Indonesia (100 million), as well as the Philippines and Pakistan (80 million each). "That's a profound reshaping of the habitability of the surface of the planet, and could lead potentially to the large-scale reorganisation of where people live," said lead author Tim Lenton, director of the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter. … [Read more...] about Climate: ‘dangerous heat’ could afflict billions by 2100
