Court upholds five death penalties, three life terms in drug trafficking case
Vietnam Supreme Court in Ho Chi Minh City Monday upheld five death sentences and three life sentences awarded to gang members for trafficking nearly 24 kilograms of heroin. The judges' panel said the gang's crime was especially dangerous to the society and the previous court's decision was correct. Vo Anh Tuan, Nguyen Xuan Dan, Vo Tien Thang, Luu Hoang Thao, and Hoang Phung Bac Son received death sentences while Truong Van Hoa, Tran Ngoc Dinh, and Lu Huu Loi will be jailed for life, all found guilty of "illegal drug trafficking." Tuan was arrested after Nguyen Viet Dung, a drugs and weapon trafficker, was arrested in 2003 and told the police about their working together. Dung said that in 2002, he had hired Tuan to sell around 10 kilograms of heroin for commissions of VND15 million (currently US$719). After his arrest, Tuan had escaped to Laos, China and Russia with fake passports. Six get death sentences for drug trafficking
Four people have been arrested in Thua Thien-Hue Province while 6 have been sentenced to death in Hoa Binh Province for drug trafficking. 25-year-old Nguyen Thi Phi Phi, a resident of Hue City, was arrested yesterday after the police caught her carrying 4 kg of drug from Laos to the city. From Phi’s testimonies, the police later captured her husband, 27-year-old Au Van Duc, and his accomplices, 30-year-old Truong Ngoc and 37-year-old Le Duc Duy. Phi and Duc told the police that their ring had been trafficking drugs from Laos to Thua Thien-Hue ten times and sold them to many people in Hue. Also yesterday the Hoa Binh Province People’s Court opened a trial for a heroin trafficking ring of 21 members, of whom 6 were given the death sentence. These 6 are Tran Le Quang, Ha Ngoc Luong, Dinh Van Tu, Ha Van Toc, Kha Van Thanh and Pham Anh Tuan. International drug trafficking network cracked down by Vietnamese Police
PANO – 7 Africans involved in a large international drug trafficking network were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City on June 11 th and 12 th by the Vietnamese Anti-Drug Crimes Department, the Police Ministry said. 3 men and 4 women were caught red-handed with a great deal of evidence and paraphernalia related to illegal drug activities. Vietnamese anti-drug crime policemen found the network and started their investigation into the case in 2008. After many days and nights tracking the gang, policemen discovered their routines. The criminals hired Vietnamese women to transport drugs from other countries to Vietnam and then to third countries, mainly China. Drugs, and at least 1 kg of heroin, were hidden in female accomplice’s bodies or their baggage when entering Vietnam by road or air.
