Around 10,000 drug addicts in HCMC are returning home from rehab centers upon successful rehabilitations. A new life awaits them. So far, many of the rehabilitated drug addicts have managed to start a new life by virtue of their patient, persistent efforts and from their awareness of the value of hard work. A few years ago, Tuyet Van was a drug addict undergoing treatment at the Binh Trieu Rehab Center. Telling of her past, Van said that at a birthday party after graduating from high school, she was invited to try a cigarette without knowing that it was laced with heroin. She became a slave to the drug right after that moment. With a strong wish to start a new life, during the period of time in treatment at the rehab center, Van devoted herself to work. Over the past four years, local film director Viet Dang has screened free, good films for rehabilitating drug addicts and disadvantaged kids in many provinces, hoping to bring about changes to these viewers' lives. Life-changing films Dang recalled pondering what his purpose of making and screening films is, if not inspiring viewers and reminding them of humanitarian values. "So why not screening films to as many people as possible? In remote areas, there aren't large screens and few bother to screen films to drug abusers at rehabilitation centers. A drug user was stabbed to death during a fight at a rehabilitation center in Saigon last Saturday, police have confirmed.The fight broke out between Tran Huu Phuc, 34, and Tran Hoang Bao, 36, at the center in Thu Duc District to the city’s northeast on Saturday.
