A scene from Song Lang movie (Source: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Two Vietnamese films will compete for titles at the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2019. ‘Song Lang’ (The Tap Box) directed by Leon Le and ‘Co Can Nha Nam Nghe Nang Mua’ (Like An Old House) directed by Mai The Hiep have been selected to compete with 27 other films at the festival held in Kuching, Malaysia, from April 25 to 27. The Tap Box tells the story of the relationship between a ‘cai luon’ (reformed theater art) artist and a gangster with a love for the art set in 1980s Ho Chi Minh City. It won for Leon Le the Best Director award at the Sharm El-Sheikh Asian Film Festival in Egypt last month, and Tokyo Gemstone Award for actor Lien Binh Phat at Japan’s Tokyo International Film Festival in 2018. 'Hai Phuong' becomes highest-grossing Vietnamese movie of all time On March 24, Box Office Mojo revealed that Hai Phuong, or Furie as it is known in English, had earned US$578,000 (VND13.4 billion) in the US, Tuoi Tre reports. Prior to that, the movie also did well here in Vietnam. According to Thanh Nien, despite not being available for moviegoers below 18, the film earned VND50 billion after three days in theaters across Vietnam and VND160 billion after three weeks. In a recent announcement, the movie's production team shared that, after a month in theaters in Vietnam, Canada and the US, Hai Phuong has raked in VND200 billion, becoming both the highest-grossing Vietnamese movie of all time and the highest-grossing movie screened in Vietnam. The move for "Roma," "Bird Box" and "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is a change from the company's traditional practice of releasing movies in theaters and on Netflix on the same day, the company said on Wednesday. "Roma," a black-and-white, Spanish-language film about a housekeeper in Mexico, will start playing in cinemas in Los Angeles, New York and Mexico on Nov. 21 and later expand to other cities and countries. Directed by Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron, "Roma" will debut on Netflix and in additional theaters on Dec. 14. At the end of September, Netflix had 137 million subscribers to its movie and TV streaming service. It began stocking its library with original films just three years ago.
