Police in Ho Chi Minh City have held a man for attempting to rob another of gold in a bid to get money to buy a car. Colonel Nguyen Tan Dat, chief of the police department of District 1, said on Tuesday that Ly Dieu Minh, 22, in District 6, was captured for trying to steal 10 taels of gold from a gold shop employee. (1 tael = 37.5 grams) Eyewitnesses reported the robbery to police officers after seeing a man running, with blood on his body, from a house in an alley on Tran Hung Dao Street, District 1, and shouting, "Robbery! Robbery!" When police arrived at the scene, they found the house to be locked and managed to storm into it, officers said, adding that they discovered Minh hiding inside a wardrobe upstairs and escorted him to their office. Police in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An have held a local man who disrupted public safety while under the influence of methamphetamine on Sunday. Chu Van Son, 35, appeared to have consumed the drug ice, or crystal methamphetamine, before being restrained by officers after threatening two local residents with a knife in Dien Bich Commune, Dien Chau District, police said yesterday. At 9:00 am, Son used a knife to force a student to give him an electric bicycle, according to witnesses. He continued to use the knife to compel Nguyen Van Quang, 34, a local resident who was standing nearby, to use his motorbike to take him to various neighboring communes. At 2:00 pm, when the two returned to Dien Bich, Son ended up being restrained by local police. Police in Ho Chi Minh City said they are searching for two men who allegedly murdered a police officer on a street early Monday morning. Pham Van Manh, an officer from Binh Phuoc Province, was found by the sidewalk of Nguyen Chi Thanh Street in District 10. The crime scene was close to a hospital where he had been guarding a prisoner receiving treatment there. Manh, 35, reportedly left the hospital around midnight after his shift. He was discovered unconscious ten minutes later. Manh was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to serious abdomen injuries. A local news website quoted an investigator as saying that two local gangsters, riding a motorbike, stopped him and asked him to pay a debt of VND200,000 (US$9). PANO - Hospital 5 under Military Zone 3 on January 26th (the fourth day of the first lunar month of 2012) successfully operated on a seriously injured patient, Lai Van Cuong. The patient, from Khanh Mau Commune, Yen Khanh District, Ninh Binh Province, was stabbed in his belly with a sharp knife in a fight on January 25th. At 23.30 the same day, Cuong was hospitalised and checked. The veins of Cuong's left kidney were broken and duodenum had a deep laceration. The patient, aged 18, received an intravenous infusion of 9 blood units while a team of surgeons from Military Central Hospital 108 assisted in the operation.
