UNDP Deputy Country Director Akiko Fujii (Source: VNA) Can Tho (VNA) – The United Nations will continue standing side-by-side with Vietnam and providing assistance for its disaster prevention and control efforts, Akiko Fujii, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Country Director in Vietnam, has said. Speaking at a meeting to mark International Day of Disaster Reduction (October 13) and an international symposium themed “Risk Management for Low Lands”, Fujii, who is also Vice-Chair of the UN Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience Joint Results Group, cited the 2018 Global Climate Risk Index statistics as saying that Vietnam ranks among the top 10 countries affected by the impacts of natural disasters. Vietnam, Japan share experience in combating natural disasters
Nhan Dan Online - Japan experts shared experiences in coping with the aftermath of natural disasters at a seminar in Hanoi this morning, putting emphasis on strengthening early warning, improving human resources and developing disaster-resilient infrastructure. Speaking at the conference held by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and Vietnam Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD), Minister of MARD Cao Duc Phat said that Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries to disasters in Southeast Asia resulting from its geography, topography, and tropical monsoon climate. In the last ten years, the number of deaths and missing due to natural disasters have tended to decrease thanks to efforts by the Vietnam Government in climate change mitigation, however, economic losses follow an upward trend, accounting for 1.5% of GDP annually, Phat noted.
