Vietnam’s electricity system currently has a total capacity of about 54,000MW, including renewable energies such as wind and solar. While largely meeting the demand at the moment, the country will need around 130,000MW by 2030, representing a huge challenge for its energy industry as many power projects remain behind schedule and the arrangement of capital sources for implementations of new power sources and grids still faces many difficulties. … [Read more...] about New strategies essential for nation’s energy-saving goals

Thailand to put world’s largest floating solar farm into use this June
Bangkok (VNA) – State-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) expects to operate a 45-megawatt floating solar farm it claims to be the largest in the world this June. Egat signed a contract with B.Grimm Power Plc, which will serve as an engineering, procurement and construction firm to develop photovoltaic panels worth 842 million baht (28 million USD) on Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani, where an Egat hydropower plant is operating. The floating solar farm is designed to be a hybrid system, working in tandem with 36MW of hydropower generation to increase optimisation capacity. The facility, which generates power on a water surface of 72 hectares, was originally scheduled for operation in December last year, but the launch was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Local media quoted Chatchai Mawong, Egat's director for hydro and renewable energy power plant development, as saying that construction is now 82 percent complete. Workers began installing the … [Read more...] about Thailand to put world’s largest floating solar farm into use this June
Legal challenges block natural gas investment
"Similar to coal, gas-fired power compares unfavourably to renewable energy. In a global environment where LNG price volatility is the norm, perhaps, the better way forward for Vietnam is to channel investments to cheaper solar and wind power, battery storage solutions and grid balancing projects," the report said. … [Read more...] about Legal challenges block natural gas investment
Vietnam gov’t seeks to nearly triple wind power capacity to 12,000MW
Provincial authorities are responsible for choosing investors and implementing newly added wind power projects. Photo: The Blue Circle. The Ministry of Industry and Trade estimates that the demand of wind power in the optimistic scenario is 11,630MW, accounting for up to 20% of the country's energy mix. That means in addition to the 4,800MW already included in the national plan, approximately 7,000MW will be added. … [Read more...] about Vietnam gov’t seeks to nearly triple wind power capacity to 12,000MW
