A ceremony took place in Hanoi on Thursday to mark the 50th establishment anniversary of the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP) and the 35th anniversary of the joint operation to search for U.S. soldiers who were reported missing in action (MIA) during the Vietnam War. New task force promotes innovation, financing for plastic waste reduction in Vietnam
The move boosts innovative ideas and solutions to drive positive changes in plastic reduction, reuse and recycling and to unlock new sources of sustainable financing. A new task force was launched by the Vietnam National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) launched to promote innovation and catalyze investment in effective solutions for reducing plastic waste and pollution in Vietnam. Vietnam attends 2023 U.N. International Bazaar
The annual event, held by the Spouses of Delegates of Member States, aims to strengthen ties between member countries and raise funds to support the U.N.’s activities and humanitarian projects. This year's bazaar saw nearly 100 booths showcasing handicraft products and traditional cuisines of U.N. member countries. The Vietnamese mission brought ceramic, lacquer, brocade and silk products to the event, along with traditional dishes like spring rolls, banh ran vung (sesame donut), che dau xanh cot dua (sweet green bean soup with coconut milk), and iced milk coffee to the event. According to Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the U.N., joining the event will help promote the good values of the country and people of Vietnam to the international community, especially the diplomatic missions in New York. Industrial property market slumps on economic woes
In the first quarter the industrial property occupancy rate in the south declined by 8 percentage points year-on-year, according to real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield. The rates declined by 11 and 9 percentage points for ready-built factories and warehouses, it added. Another consultancy, JLL, said there are signs that the southern industrial property market is going into a short-term low demand period since exports are down. The Vietnam Association of Realtors (VARS) said the market is suffering due to delays in clearing lands for many projects. The lack of accommodation for workers at industrial zones is also a weak spot, it added. With dwindling global economic prospects, foreign investors are keeping away. In the first five months of 2023 foreign direct investment pledge in Vietnam was 7% lower at $10.86 billion. In a directive released Thursday on electricity saving, he warns that the power situation is challenging now and will remain so in the coming years with demand increasing. Economical and efficient use of electricity is the solution to ensuring energy security, the directive says. People should use energy-efficient electrical equipment, switch off electrical devices when leaving the room, only use air conditioners when absolutely necessary but setting them at not less than 26 degrees Celsius. People should avoid using incandescent light bulbs and install rooftop solar power systems. The country should reduce electricity use by 2% a year and power losses in transmission lines to less than 6% by 2025. By 2030 at least 50% of all office and residential buildings should use rooftop solar power. Only LED bulbs should be used in street lights by 2025. Hydropower plants stop electricity generation due to lack of water
Several hydropower plants in the northern region have suspended generating electricity due to the shortage of water amid massive power outages. The water level at the Thac Ba Reservoir has gone below the dead level Seven large dams in the north including Son La, Lai Chau, Huoi Quang, Thac Ba, Tuyen Quang, Ban Ve and Hua Na had reached dead storage levels, forcing them to suspend generating power. Only Hoa Binh hydropower dam has water and could maintain power generation until June 13, said Tran Viet Hoa, director of the Electricity Regulatory Authority under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. “The electricity supply situation in the north is facing major challenges because hydroelectricity accounts 43.6 percent of output,” he said at a meeting on Wednesday. Currently, Huu Nghi Border Gate handles customs clearance for about 750 vehicles per day, while its area for those carrying imports/exports can accommodate about 450 vehicles. So, vehicles are directed to non-tariff areas which have room for about 800 to 1,000. Meanwhile, from May 26 to June 5, over 630 trucks carrying durian to China went through the Tan Thanh Border Gate. On average, the border gate provides customs clearance for 300 vehicles per day while it can deal with about 1,100-1,200 at maximum. If the vehicles carrying agricultural products and fruits exceed the capacity, they will be directed to a non-tariff area that can deal with about 100.
