Hanoi health workers quit in droves over heavy workload, low pay
A report by Hanoi People's Committee on June 20 revealed 532 medical personnel had quit last year, while 82 decided to switch workplaces. In the first four months of this year, 226 have quit and 17 switched workplaces, the report added. Hanoi said the medical field has focused all its resources on fighting the pandemic since 2020. Due to the low number of workers, the sheer amount of workload and lower incomes and benefits in public facilities, many are opting to quit or seek better opportunities. Hoa, the former head of a ward medical station in Dong Da District, said her workload was too much while her salary wasn't enough to make a living. She quit at the end of March. During the height of the pandemic, Hoa and her colleagues did contact tracing and vaccination day in and day out. Pressure was building up, yet they only got a "bonus" of VND500,000 ($21.50). Her colleagues, a married couple, only got VND8 million a month in total. Amid a worker exodus in the medical field and … [Read more...] about Hanoi health workers quit in droves over heavy workload, low pay
MHT at forefront of global megatrends
Craig Bradshaw, CEO of Masan High-Tech Materials Corporation (MHT). — Photo courtesy of the firm Craig Bradshaw, CEO of Masan High-Tech Materials Corporation (MHT), shared the company's vision to become a leading integrated supplier of advanced high-tech materials critical to global innovation, and his thoughts on being the operator of the firm with the biggest tungsten deposits, at Nui Phao Mining in Thai Nguyen, northern Viet Nam. In the most severe time of COVID last year, MHT saw its most successful business year in its history, with tungsten output and recycling rates both reaching record highs. What is the secret to this success, and can you tell us about the Nui Phao Mine? When we first came in 2011, Nui Phao appeared to be paddy fields and buffalos. Over three years, we brought in the construction director and built a team of people to take it from an idea or a concept to a commercial operation. At the time we did that, that was the first new tungsten mine to be … [Read more...] about MHT at forefront of global megatrends
Changing lanes: from homeless HCMC youth to successful business owner
Phùng Ngọc Phong at his garage. Photo dantri.com.vn HCM CITY — Driving around districts 1 and 5 brings back a lot of memories to Phùng Ngọc Phong, the 44-year-old director of a private company in Bình Thạnh District, HCM City. Despite his car and well-to-do looks, he grew up on these streets, doing what he had to do to survive. "From a street kid, I now have a family with my wife and children. I have bought a house, a car, with my self-earned money. At this moment, I feel so happy and don't need anything," the director of Phùng Nguyễn Cao Tốc Co., Ltd told Dân Trí online newspaper. Born in a family in HCM City. Phong's parents left HCM City for Bình Dương Province to earn a living. Then they took him to Cambodia to find other jobs. In the vague memory of an 8-year-old boy, Phong remembered his family living with another group of Vietnamese people in Cambodia where his parents did many jobs. He stayed with his father, and sometimes with his mother … [Read more...] about Changing lanes: from homeless HCMC youth to successful business owner
Pushing journalism to the forefront of digitalisation
Colin Blackwell, Founder and CEO Enablecode We live in an age of exponential change. It is said that the amount of change we will observe in our own lifetimes will be at least as much as all the changes of all human history that preceded it. We could well think that it would have been fun to be there when Gutenberg printed his first-ever document in 1450, but we are in luck as we will all witness even greater changes. In my younger days in England, I would subscribe to the old broadsheets – impractically large sheets of paper that always managed to get awkwardly crumpled and annoy the person next to you on the train. Whatever was included was all that you could access at that moment. What a contrast to today. We are nowadays so used to reading whatever most interests us personally in a convenient way online, that we forget how that was all made possible. As media readers, we are almost spoilt for choice, with everything so easy and accessible online. But that all took a huge … [Read more...] about Pushing journalism to the forefront of digitalisation
Starbucks CSR initiatives gather pace
Patricia Marques, general manager of Starbucks Vietnam How tough is the coffee competition in Vietnam this year and how do you expect things to pan out moving into next year for your company? Competition is up there. We have plenty of competitors and there are an enormous number of players in the market, although not necessarily competing in the same arena. Although we may all be coffee brands, some brands are more skewed towards teas or fruit drinks. So in the coffee arena, we find that there is plenty of competition and in the next few years, we will probably continue to see even more than now, considering that many international players are not yet in Vietnam. The quality of Vietnamese coffee beans can be unstable from year to year, so how do you support farmers in places like Dalat to ensure quality is up to standard? In my role, I have no participation in the sourcing or the buying of Starbucks Coffee for the world. However, as a company, we try to be as close as … [Read more...] about Starbucks CSR initiatives gather pace
This Saigon food stall sells savory sticky rice for just one dollar
Xoi man (savory sticky rice) is a staple of Vietnamese cuisine, universally loved for its inexpensive price and bold flavor. It is available in practically every neighborhood in Saigon from early morning to late at night. Sticky rice has long been a local favorite thanks to how long it keeps eaters full. Each stall has its own way of cooking different types of glutinous rice to get the perfect stickiness. Because of its high calorie content, glutinous rice's starch keeps diners full for longer than other starchy items like vermicelli, bread, and rice noodles. Although there are many xoi man stalls in the city, it is not always easy to find the perfect plate of this storied dish. Thu serves 'xoi ga' to her customers at her stall in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Photo: Minh Duc / Tuoi Tre Traditionally, xoi man is topped with pork floss, a few slices of cha lua (Vietnamese pork sausage), sauce, a few pieces of lap xuong (dry-cured sausage), and … [Read more...] about This Saigon food stall sells savory sticky rice for just one dollar
