Almost 100 people died during the five-day Reunification and Labour Day holiday. 96 killed in road accidents during five-day holiday A total of 135 road accidents occurred from April 27 to May 1, left 96 dead and 96 injured according to a report by the National Traffic Safety Committee. 26 road accidents occurred on May 1 alone, killing 16 and injuring 17 people. There were two railway accidents with two deaths, the report said. The report also said that drunk-driving, speeding, overloading and dangerous driving across lanes were commonplace during the holiday. The committee blamed low-quality bus services for a number of accidents. The traffic police dealt with a total of 11,968 violations during the holiday and collected nearly VND15.3bn (USD657,000) in fines. (Photo: thaivisa.com) Bangkok (VNA) – Drink driving was the main cause of the rise in road accidents during Songkran Festival from April 12-16, the traditional New Year of Thailand. A total of 378 people were killed and more than 3,570 others injured in 3,418 road accidents during the five-day holiday, reported the Road Safety Centre (RSC) of Thailand. On April 15 alone, some 552 road accidents occurred, claiming 69 lives and injuring 589 others, 42 percent of which were caused by drink driving. Thai authorities said about 22,000 people were tested for alcohol use at checkpoints nationwide between April 11 and 15. Some 7,000 drink drivers were taken into custody while more than 10,000 motorcycles and cars were seized.
