Da Nang authorities announced on Sunday that the Han River Bridge will be closed to all types of vehicles at night for 15 days to complete routine maintenance. People are advised to make detours via the Thuan Phuoc and Dragon Bridges to travel between Hai Chau and Son Tra Districts during the closures, which will take place between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am every day, except Fridays through Sundays. The municipal Department of Transport joined forces with the city’s Management Board of Transport Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance Projects to ensure traffic safety during the 15-day suspension. Inaugurated in 2000, the Han River Bridge is the first cable-stayed swing bridge in Vietnam and an iconic structure in Da Nang. The bridge is 487.7 meters long and 12.9 meters wide, including 11 spans connecting two central roads between Hai Chau and Son Tra Districts. Apartment buildings near collapse in northern Vietnam city
An apartment building on Da Nang Street in Van My Ward of Ngo Quyen District comprises 1,288 apartments housing more than 4,200 people. Built between 1975 and 1980, the building has been seriously downgraded. Every time there is a storm, local authorities must evacuate residents. Hai Phong has 178 apartment buildings, hosting 7,000 households, that are in so poor conditions that they need to be demolished. The city's Department of Planning and Investment earlier this month invited bidding into 10 new apartment blocks that are expected to accomodate nearly 4,500 households from the dilapidated buildings. The walls of one building have grown mossy and peeled. Of the 10 buildings, each rising five stories, some blocks have been classified as dangerous, which means residents must be moved out. An iron pillar is put in place to support the balcony roof of an apartment on the fourth floor. … [Read more...] about Apartment buildings near collapse in northern Vietnam city

Vietnamese scuba instructors popular with international students
Two Vietnamese scuba instructors based in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province are well known among international tourists coming to Vietnam to take up diving lessons. They emphasize protecting marine life during their training sessions. Nguyen Van Loc and Nguyen Tan Thanh are members of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). With certificates of diving competence, they are qualified to provide PADI-accredited diving courses. Twenty years ago, Loc had a life-changing experience diving with a foreign visitor in Hon Mun Marine Reserve, Khanh Hoa Province. The coach spotted an unsuspecting squid, which he grabbed and later cooked it. To this his foreign student objected, saying that the payment he made was for him to witness wildlife, not the barbaric habits of his coach. “If you catch and cook it, you get one meal for yourself. But if you take care of it, you are to be commended to my fellows back home,” said the student. “When more tourists come here for … [Read more...] about Vietnamese scuba instructors popular with international students

Phu Quoc probes illegal constructions in protected maritime areas
Functional forces in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on Sunday inspected several tourist bungalows built without permission in Ham Ninh Commune of Phu Quoc Island City, where tourism is booming. The inspection came following Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s report on the illegal constructions that have become commonplace in the popular resort island off southern Vietnam. The illicitly-built tourist bungalows encroached on the Phu Quoc marine protected areas. They were constructed on concrete pillars firmly planted into the ground below the water and connected to the shore via a wooden boardwalk. Local authorities have granted construction certificates to none of these tourist bungalows, some of the owners of the structures admitted. The Kien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and related agencies have pledged to thoroughly handle these violations in accordance with the law and ensure the violators will return the seabed of the affected marine … [Read more...] about Phu Quoc probes illegal constructions in protected maritime areas
