Then singing becomes part of intangible cultural heritages of humanity

Illustrative image (Photo: VNA)   Hanoi (VNA) – “Then” singing practice of Vietnam’s ethnic groups of Tay, Nung, Thai has been named in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Department of Cultural Heritage said on December 13. The recognition was made during the 14th session of the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Bogota, Colombia, on December 12 (local time). Addressing the session, Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage Le Thi Thu Hien pledged to take necessary measures to protect the values of Then singing practice. According to the committee, the practice has met five criteria for being named in the list. Then singing recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Human

Then is a practice singing in the spiritual life of the Tay and Nung in Vietnam, reflecting the views of human on the universe and nature. The ritual is performed by “Ong Then” and “Ba Then” who sing and play a musical instrument while presenting offerings to pray for good health, bumper crops and good luck for the New Year. Then singing is a folk musical genre of the spiritual and cultural life of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in Vietnam.The two ethic minority groups often live in villages in highland mountainous provinces in northern Vietnam such as Bac Giang, Bac Kan,Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh ,Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai.
