Located 24 km to the south-east of Quy Nhơn, the small island of Cù Lao Xanh has an area of around 5 sq.km, which is 4km in length and the largest part of which is just 1.2km. Despite its impressively blue charm as its name and picturesque landscapes, the island has long been an unrecognized destination on Việt Nam's tourism map, and is now still considered "the island of the old and the children." Although the island is surrounded by the sea on all sides, its people are not able to make their living from the sea. According to the People's Committee of Nhơn Châu Commune, the highest annual fishery production in Cù Lao Xanh is less than 1,000 tons and that is plummeting, once reported less than 400 tons. The average monthly income of people could not even reach VNĐ1 million (US$45) and the average population once dropped to only 2,000 people. NDO – A national flagpole was inaugurated on Cu Lao Xanh island, Nhon Chau island commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province on October 31. The 22.66-metre flagpole was built of granite at a cost of VND1.2 billion (US$56.500) funded by the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam. It is one of seven national flagpoles to be installed on outpost islands nationwide under a project launched by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and the Vietnamese Students’ Association (VSA). Cu Lao Xanh island, which is home to nearly 2,100 people, is 12 nautical miles from Quy Nhon beach and seven nautical miles from Xuan Hai beach, Song Cau town, Phu Yen province. Officials of the south central province of Binh Dinh are hoping to persuade tourists to add the province to their Vietnam itineraries.Prior to 2015, the tourism industry in Binh Dinh was still nascent. Collector Nguyen Huy Khanh's passion is for stamps of lighthouses. Vuong Tam and Thu Huong report. Philatelists usually get feverish with excitement when it comes to stamps depicting flowers, animals, or cultural monuments but HCM City's Nguyen Huy Khanh's particular passion is for lighthouses. Such is his love for lighthouses, he now has a collection of 600 stamps, which he has amassed over the last 12 years, making him the possessor of the biggest lighthouse stamp collection in Viet Nam and possibly the world. Khanh, who used to work as a technician for the Southern Viet Nam Maritime Safety Corporation, claims to have set foot on nearly 80 lighthouses in Viet Nam and dozens of others abroad. "I collect lighthouse stamps because I just love the sea and the light that illuminates the way for ships in the dark," Khanh says.
