Vietnamese province files criminal charges against 259 rioters
Binh Duong police said 259 people are in police custody for criminal investigations into their role in riots last week that damaged assets of companies based in local industrial zones. Another 276 people were fined for participating in the violent incidents, a provincial police department source told Thanh Nien News on May 22. All of them were arrested following the riots on May 13-14 in the province, in which hundreds of factories were vandalized, looted, 15 of which were set ablaze. Police said violations ranged from disturbing public order, opposing officers on duty, robbery, destroying properties, misappropriating properties, and consuming stolen properties. HCMC sea police seek criminal charges in bridge collision
Ho Chi Minh City's Sea Traffic Police Department has recommended pressing criminal charges against those responsible for an incident in which a foreign ship crashed into a city bridge last week. It is very likely that criminal charges will be pressed against individuals and agencies related the collision between the Lady Belinda and the MuongChuoiBridge in Nha Be District, said Tran Van Xinh, head of the sea traffic department. The traffic police have asked local investigators to look into a case. Compensation for damages will also be calculated, Xinh said, adding that all case records had been transferred to police investigators. Authorities consider criminal charges in mass exam cheating
Education authorities in the northern province of Bac Giang have asked police to specify whether any criminal charges will be filed in an exam cheating case that has been grabbing headlines since last week. In an interview with Dan Tri news website, Nguyen Huy Bang, chief inspector of the Ministry of Education and Training, however, did not say what crimes, if any, occurred at Doi Ngo Private High School during the national high school graduation exam on June 2-4. Youth threatening traffic cops in northern Vietnam faces criminal charges
Police in the northern province of Lang Son have suggested the filing of criminal charges against an 18-year-old youth who threatened to assault two traffic police officers after being stopped for not wearing a crash helmet. The youth, who was arrested June 8 several hours after he threatened the cops with a broken bottle, has been identified as Hoang Minh Phong, a resident of Dong Dang Town in Cao Loc District, according to a Monday report by news website VnExpress. A video posted on the Internet showed Phong break a glass bottle and swinging the two halves to threaten the police. He also fetched an iron chain from a local's house, before running away with the police chasing him. The two police officers, who are new to the job, responded to the attacks by stepping back and bending to avoid being hurt.
