Vietnam’s southern Ho Chi Minh City has seen numbers of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and dengue fever in children increasing sharply, with six deaths of dengue having been recorded, the municipal Center for Disease Control (HCDC) reported on Friday. During the first four months of 2022, the city recorded 1,599 hand-foot-mouth disease cases, with 96 percent being children aged one to five years old. The number of hand-foot-mouth cases has increased alarmingly in most districts, including District 8, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, and Binh Chanh, and Thu Duc City. Notably, from May 6 to May 12 only, 628 patients were recorded, nearly three times higher than the average of the previous four weeks. Numbers of cases increased both in hospital treatment and outpatient examination across the city, the HCDC reported. Hanoi reported the highest number of infections on the day with 381 cases, followed by Nghe An with 126 and Phu Tho with 111. The northern province of Bac Giang registered an additional 1,012 cases from earlier days after verifying information. The national tally reached 10,704,524. Vietnam records 1,831 new COVID-19 cases on May 18

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - There were 1,831 COVID-19 infections registered across Vietnam on May 18, an increase of 45 new cases compared to the number reported on the previous day. The new transmissions were detected in 48 cities and provinces, bringing the country's tally to 10,701,796. The capital city of Hanoi still topped the country in terms of new daily infections, with 403 patients. It was followed by northern Vinh Phuc and Phu Tho provinces, with 139 and 125 cases. There was one COVID-19 related death reported in on the day, bringing the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 43,072, accounting for 0.4 percent of total cases. Separate classrooms designated for candidates suspected, confirmed with Covid-19
Students take part in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2022- 2022 academic year. Students who are confirmed cases of Covid-19 and want to participate in the exam have to display an application for the examination with the signature of parents or guardians. Candidates, teachers and other staff who will invigilate the examination have to strictly comply with Covid-19 prevention regulations. The municipal Department of Education and Training asked its units in Thu Duc City and 21 districts across the city to take responsibility for coordinating with the Steering Committees for Covid-19 Prevention and Control to implement medical works and measures against the virus during the exam. ‘Straight to your soul’: Japan’s taiko reinvents drum tradition
In a hall on Japan's Sado island, 71-year-old Yoshikazu Fujimoto strikes the imposing drum mounted before him, producing a boom so powerful that it reverberates through the floorboards. Fujimoto is a veteran performer of Japanese taiko drumming, a musical form with roots in religious rituals, traditional theatre and the joyous abandon of seasonal festivals called matsuri. But for all its ancient pedigree, taiko as a stage performance is a fairly modern invention, developed by a jazz musician and popularised in part by one of Japan's most famous troupes: Sado island's Kodo. Fujimoto is the oldest of the 37 musicians that make up the group, which recruits members through a rigorous two-year training programme. It was founded partly to attract people to Sado, off Japan's west coast, and tours internationally, spreading the gospel of taiko.
