High school students in HCM City get counselling on admission to vocational schools. — VNA/VNS Photo Thu Hoài Viet Nam News HCM CITY — In 2017, Lê Văn Quốc applied to the Cao Thắng Technical College, one of the leading vocational training schools in HCM City, despite getting admission to a university. “I saw the high rate of employment of graduates from the school,” he explained to Việt Nam News. Unlike in the past many high school students now prefer to join vocational training schools. In fact, in 2017, 25 per cent of them did not apply at all to universities and colleges, according to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs. Russian centre director praised for fostering relations with Vietnam An insignia was presented to the Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Hanoi, Zubtsova Elena Robertovna, on May 17 to recognise her efforts in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between Vietnam and Russia. The insignia, named "For peace and friendship among nations", was granted by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO). VUFO Chairman Vu Xuan Hong said Zubtsova Elena Robertovna has worked in Vietnam for many years. She used to be a Russian language editor at the Voice of Vietnam, a collaborator with the Lao dong (Labour) newspaper, the head of the Russian Cooperation Agency's office in Vietnam, and a counsellor at the Russian Embassy in Vietnam. Vietnam sees 20.7 percent drop in poverty levels According to the World Bank Poverty Assessment 2012 report based on new standards, the poverty rate in Vietnam has fallen from 58 percent to 20.7 percent in the past twenty years. Impoverished households were mainly in northwest and northeast mountainous regions and some highland provinces, while middle and rich households were in Hong River Delta, southeast region, and coastal cities. As for urban areas, although poverty rate is low, residents have to face rising costs of living and many citizens work in unofficial sectors or are unemployed and do not have social welfare. Under the new standards, the poverty line is VND653,000 per person per month(US$2.25). No case of Zika virus reported in Vietnam No cases of the Zika virus have been recorded in Vietnam so far, the Preventive Medicine Department under the Ministry of Health said on February 27. The Ho Chi Minh City-based Pasteur Institute reported that samples taken from dengue patients in 2015 tested negative for Zika. In early 2016, 83 patients from localities that have a high prevalence of Aedes mosquitoes – the main transmitter of the virus – with symptoms similar to Zika also tested negative for the virus, according to the institute. The department, however, warned that there was a high risk the virus could enter the country. The ministry will continue collecting samples from suspected cases in localities to detect the disease and prevent it from spreading. Vietnamese universities, colleges to undergo radical shake-up
The Education Ministry is weighing a reshuffling project that would see equal polices for state and private universities, simplification of school establishment procedures, and other issues of public concern. Under the project, the ministry was planning to admit an intake of around 4.5 million university students in 2020 with 40 percent of them allocated for private universities and colleges.
