Cold wave

A cold spell has brought chilling weather to northern Vietnam, lowering temperatures in some areas to as low as three degrees Celsius over some days from Monday, while other parts of the country will be warmer, the central weather agency reported on Sunday. Under the influence of the cold wave, the northern and north-central areas are forecast to have rain in some places while the temperature has begun to drop sharply on the first day of this week, especially in mountainous sites where snowing and frost are possible, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. The lowest temperatures in these regions are to range from nine to 12 Celsius degrees from Monday to Wednesday, which will fall to six to nine degrees in mountainous terrain and even to around three degrees in highly mountainous areas. The northern region would see a new cold wave from January 24. According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, the northern region’s weather is warming with a temperature of 16-23 degrees centigrade. On January 19-23, rain would decrease in many localities, providing more favourable weather for people to enjoy Tet. However, from January 24, a new cold front would hit the region. In Hanoi, the temperature dropped to 9 degrees Celsius on January 24 before rising a bit towards the end of the week. The midlands and plains will see temperatures fall to 9-11 degrees Celsius, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Northern Vietnam will see temperatures hovering around 16-19 degrees Celsius between January 16-19, with with an average daily temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius or less. Scientists in Chile's Patagonia region are unearthing the southernmost dinosaur fossils recorded outside Antarctica, including remains of megaraptors that would have dominated the area's food chain before their mass extinction. Fossils of megaraptors, a carnivorous dinosaur that inhabited parts of South America during the Cretaceous period some 70 million years ago, were found in sizes up to 10 meters long, according to the Journal of South American Earth Sciences. "We were missing a piece," Marcelo Leppe, director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), told Reuters . "We knew where there were large mammals, there would also be large carnivores, but we hadn't found them yet."
