The Hanoi Times - Vietnam has been long known as a major producer of coffee and it is no surprise that the people have developed their own styles of coffee which have broader and richer taste. Coffee grown in Vietnam is divided into two types, Arabica and Robusta coffee. Arabica coffee is cultivated in northern mountainous areas and in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, 1,000 meters above sea level. Robusta coffee, which has a higher content of caffeine - from 3 to 4 percent - was brought to Vietnam by French colonists in the late 19th century. Vietnam is now the world's biggest producer of Robusta beans, usually used for lower grade coffee blends and as a filler for the higher-quality Arabica. The Central Highlands province of Dak Lak exports around 900,000 tons of Robusta coffee every year, which contributes to the country's status as one of the largest Robusta exporters.
