Vietnam’s cashew ‘capital’ takes action to comply with EU’s anti-deforestation regulations
The regulation, approved by the European Commission (EC) on May 16, 2023, is the latest by the EU regarding green, sustainable development, specifically deforestation-free agricultural products. It sets mandatory due diligence rules for all operators and traders who place, make available or export the following commodities from the EU market: palm oil, cattle, wood, coffee, cocoa, rubber and soy. The rules also apply to a number of derived products such as chocolate, furniture, printed paper, and selected palm oil-based derivatives (used for example as components in personal care products). They will be applicable to most companies from December 2024. Micro-enterprises and small-medium enterprises would have an additional six months to comply with the regulation's requirements. Former police captain jailed for robbing gold stores
Ngo Van Quoc, 39, will be jailed for eight years and three months, a court in Thua Thien – Hue Province announced Thursday on two charges of "asset appropriation" and "appropriating and illegally using military weapons." At around 12:30 p.m. on July 31 last year, Quoc took an AK47 rifle to the gold shops at Dong Ba Market in Hue, threatened the staff and shot at the glass shelves where gold items were displayed. He then took the gold items and threw them into the street for people to pick, shouting "Gold for the poor," according to eyewitnesses. He repeated the stunt for about 10 minutes before leaving the scene and walking along Tran Hung Dao Street in front of the market to reach Trinh Cong Son Park. As he left the market, people rushed to the scene to collect the gold. Around 2 p.m., Quoc dropped his gun and surrendered after a 15-minute negotiation with local police. Vietnamese province halts foreign firms’ partnerships with 328 farms over environmental issues
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam has written to four foreign-invested firms asking them to suspend cooperation agreements with 328 livestock farms as these farms have no certificates of completion of environmental protection works. Previously, the department, in collaboration with relevant agencies and local authorities, conducted inspections to assess the adherence to legal requirements for environmental protection by nearly 10,000 livestock farms and poultry facilities in the province. The four-month comprehensive review of documents and on-site inspections resulted in the discovery of 328 pig and chicken farming operations across 10 out of 11 districts and cities, excluding Bien Hoa City, holding livestock farming contracts with four foreign-invested enterprises without the necessary environmental permits. In early September, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) lowered anti-dumping duties on frozen tra fish filets from Vietnam following its latest preliminary conclusion. The Federal Register, the daily journal of the U.S. government, published the preliminary results of the 19th anti-dumping duty administrative review (POR19) by DOC on Vietnam’s frozen tra fish filets exported to the U.S. in the August 1, 2021 - July 31, 2022 period. Accordingly, the U.S. authority determined that two Vietnamese companies, Vinh Hoan Corporation and Can Tho Import Export Seafood Joint Stock Company (Caseamex), which were selected for individual examination as mandatory respondents, will enjoy a tax rate of 0 USD per kilo and 0.14 USD per kilo, respectively.
