The water supply market is beset with many groups of interests, according to Luu Binh Nhuong, a National Assembly Deputy. WHA Utilities and Power PLC (WHAUP) has announced the completion of a transaction in which it acquired 34 percent of shares of the Song Duong Surface Water Company. The deal is worth 2.762 billion baht, or VND2.080 trillion. Song Duong Water Plant 2011 was the time when Vietnam witnessed a movement of investment in the water supply sector. A lot of foreign investment funds also jumped into the market. Also in the province, the holding company of WHAUP has another investment project – WHA Industrial Zone 1, capitalized at VND22 trillion ($1 billion), covering an area of 3,200 hectares. Many National Assembly deputies have suggested that tap water business needs to be added into the list of conditional business sectors amid public concerns about the quality of water from domestic suppliers. The proposal was made at a discussion on the revised Law on Investment in Hanoi on Wednesday. According to Deputy Truong Trong Nghia from HCM City, tap water business should be considered as a conditional business area in the revised Law on Investment. Agribank lends over 219 million USD to develop hi-tech agriculture. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) has so far provided more than 5.1 trillion VND (219.3 million USD) in soft loans for hi-tech agricultural projects across Vietnam. The loans were taken out by nearly 3,100 borrowers, including 80 corporate customers who were lent over 4.43 trillion VND (190.5 million USD). After the Vietnam National Green Growth Strategy was formulated in 2012, Agribank has launched a credit package worth 50 trillion VND (2.15 billion USD), offering preferential interest rates, to develop clean agriculture, with priority given to hi-tech agricultural projects. Phú Yên Province is building the first solar-powered public lighting system for Tuy Hòa’s Walking Street. — Photo courtesy Thu Hương PHÚ YÊN — The central province of Phú Yên began construction on the second stage of the first solar-powered public lighting system for the city of Tuy Hòa’s walking street, which will make it the first urban area in central Việt Nam lit by renewable energy. The provincial investment project managing board said solar panels will be installed with a total capacity of 104Kwp to supply clean energy for the lighting system, saving 360 tonnes of carbon per year. (Photo: Yonhap/VNA) Seoul (VNA) – Representatives of the Vietnamese Embassy in the Republic of Korea (RoK) came to Tongmyeong city to meet the families of six Vietnamese fishermen who are missing following a boat fire off the coast of country. The Vietnamese embassy’s representatives also met with local police and search and rescue forces. The city’s authorities have helped with accommodation and travel fees for the families of the missing fishermen. Search and rescue updates are being provided twice a day. On November 21, part of the vessel was retrieved by the RoK’s maritime police, and it was set to be transported to Jeju island the next day.
