Ha, winner of the MasterChef show in 2012 and renowned for her journey as a blind chef, delighted audiences on Monday with her culinary skills and participated in a discussion on entrepreneurship opportunities and challenges for women at the Dong Rung Van Ho Cooperative in Buot Village in Chieng Yen Commune, Van Ho District of Son La. During the event, the Vietnamese American chef demonstrated her prowess by preparing grilled meat served with herbs and kimchi, with corn fried rice. These dishes featured Korean-inspired flavors, largely owing to Ha's husband, John Suh, who is of Korean-American descent. The star ingredient, pork belly, was provided by the locals of Buot Village. Ha relies on her sense of taste and smell to discern the flavors of spices, while her husband assists in grilling the meat and stir-frying the rice. Ha not only showcased her culinary expertise but also took the time to teach the local women how to prepare and savor these dishes. She radiated joy as she … [Read more...] about MasterChef champion Christine Ha brings Korean flavors to Vietnam’s northern highlands

Man City shocked by Wolves, Spurs beat nine-man Liverpool
Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season came undone in a shock 2-1 loss to Wolves, but Liverpool missed the chance to go top as they were reduced to nine men in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham. Manchester United slumped to another damaging defeat as Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Old Trafford, while Arsenal moved to within one point of the top after cruising to a 4-0 win at Bournemouth. City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles. By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games, but stunned the champions at Molineux. Ruben Dias' own goal put the home side in front only for City to respond through Julian Alvarez's free-kick. Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time. "We have to do more but even when we win we have to do … [Read more...] about Man City shocked by Wolves, Spurs beat nine-man Liverpool
Working with American business partners requires understanding their way of thinking
In January 2000, we established our first branch in San Jose, California, the heart of Silicon Valley. The director of that branch was a patriotic diasporic Vietnamese. But the American Dream did not come true for us. After merely one year of operations, FPT USA had to temporarily stop operating due to a lack of customers. We tried everything, with different people attempting to take the reigns of business development. From a Vietnamese expat to a graduate from prestigious MBA programs. What we received were critics, portraying our managers as "delusional about our corporate capability" and our programmers "weak in both expertise and language skills." It was a total failure. No one cared about a nameless company from Vietnam, a country only known then for the prolonged war. One of our then-potential customers was surprised to learn that it only took one hour to fly from Hanoi to Bangkok. He could not imagine the locations were so close, despite his own flying to Bangkok quite … [Read more...] about Working with American business partners requires understanding their way of thinking
Southeast Asian football teams slip in second round of Asian Games
Thailand (in blue) play South Korea in Asian Games on September 21, 2023. Photo by FAT In the early game on Thursday, Indonesia had a shocking defeat against Taiwan and put themselves in a tough situation. Meanwhile, Vietnam lost to Iran, Myanmar got slammed by China and Thailand crumbled under South Korea. All three games took place at the same time and had the same script: the winner totally dominated their opponent and scored freely. All four Southeast Asian teams are third in their group after the second round and their chances of advancing still remains as the four best third-placed teams will get past the group stage. The ranking teams in third place will be calculated based on their result with the top two teams of each group. Since there is a group that does not have four teams, the head-to-head result with the last-placed teams will not be counted. Among the best third-placed teams, Thailand are leading with one point and a goal difference of -4. Behind them are … [Read more...] about Southeast Asian football teams slip in second round of Asian Games

Vietnam start Asian Games women’s football campaign with easy win over Nepal
Two Vietnamese top players, Pham Hai Yen and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, were on target as Vietnam kicked off their campaign in women’s football at the 19th Asian Games in China with an easy win to Nepal on Thursday. Hai Yen earned Vietnam the opener and Bich Thuy widened the lead to 2-0. Vietnam, who have targeted the second-place finish in their Group D behind reigning champions Japan, faced significant obstacles from Nepal’s strong defensive formation in the first half. Head coach Mai Duc Chung brought a team including ten under 23-year-old players to Hangzhou, China, but they rarely threatened goalkeeper Anjila Subba’s net. The scenario slightly changed after Hai Yen’s close-range goal broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute. Vietnam exerted pressure on Nepal’s goal while their rivals, unable to maintain the defensive stance, opted to push forward aggressively in an attempt to level the score.
