Preparations underway for first phase of clinical trials for Covivac vaccine

Dr. Duong Huu Thai, director of the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC), will be part of a research team receiving training on the testing process and the recruitment of volunteers who will participate in the first phase of human trials for Covivac, the nation’s second potential COVID-19 vaccine. Ahead of the trials, Hanoi Medical University has prepared all necessary facilities for vaccine injections, volunteer monitoring, and emergency aid. The representative from the Hanoi Medical University stated that the clinical trial area will be located on the third floor of the university’s dormitory, while all accommodation, medicines, and equipment for human trials has been prepared in line with standards set out by the Ministry of Health. According to the schedule, volunteers will remain at the clinical trial area for a period of 24 hours after receiving their shots and will be subject to strict health observations by the research team. Covivac is a homegrown vaccine that has been researched and developed by IVAC. Indeed, it will be the nation’s second COVID-19 vaccine to be clinically tested on humans. The first shot of Covivac vaccine in the first phase of clinical trials will be given to volunteers by mid-March. According to the initial assessment, Covivac is effective against the new SARS-CoV-2 strain detected in the UK and South Africa. Moving forward, IVAC plans to offer the Covivac vaccine at a price of VND60,000 per dose. Meanwhile, as the first domestically-produced COVID-19 vaccine, Nanocovax, developed by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC, has now moved onto its second phase of human trials. Armless girl doesn’t let disability hold her back

Linh Thị Hồng in her class. — Photo nhandan.com.vn VĨNH PHÚC — Linh Thị Hồng is admired by her teachers and peers alike at Ngọc Thanh C Elementary School in Vĩnh Phúc Province for her dedication to her studies and boundless optimism. Despite being born prematurely with a weight of 1.5kg and without arms, Hồng has thrived thanks to her spirit and the hard work and tears of her parents Linh Văn Ba and Dương Thị Vui, who are Sán Dìu ethnic people living Lập Định Village, Ngọc Thanh Commune of Phúc Yên City. Her weak body made Hồng suffer a lot early in life and she spent more time in the hospital than at home. Hồng's health has been relatively stable since 2015, after four colonoscopy-related surgeries. Without hands, Hồng uses her legs for all daily activities. Due to her disability, her parents and neighbours thought that Hồng would be unable to go to school but with the help of her family and teachers, the girl overcame adversity and lives life with her feet. “Born in a family of three siblings, Hồng was born with a birth defect without arms up to her elbow,” said Ba, Hồng's father. “In my family, there was no one with any deformity. Hồng was our first daughter,” Ba recalled. “We were so sad but we told ourselves that we would take care of and raise her anyway,” the father said. “We gradually felt reassured and relieved when we watched our daughter grow up day by day,” he added. Two years later, Hồng had two brothers. Despite not having hands, Hồng always had optimism and learnt to do everything with her feet. “She can do everything with her feet very nicely such as drawing, writing and sewing,” her father said. When Hồng’s brother started to go to school, she taught herself using his textbooks. Seeing her friends in the neighbourhood going to school, the little girl yearned to go with them to class. “Seeing that the children around the neighbourhood all went to kindergarten, my girl also asked to go. …

Can Tho office to support reintegration of returning migrant women

(Photo: VNA) Can Tho (VNA) – Another One-Stop Service Office (OSSO) was launched in Can Tho on March 3 to facilitate sustainable reintegration of returning migrant women in the Mekong Delta city. OSSO Can Tho is part of the project “Strengthening Vietnamese capacity for sustainable reintegration of returning women migrants and their households in Vietnam” implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in cooperation with the Women’s Union of Vietnam. Funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the project has been carried out in Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Can Tho and Hau Giang since March 2020. OSSO Can Tho aims to provide returning migrant women and their families in Can Tho and other Mekong Delta provinces with free counselling, consultation and support services on legal advice, psychological assistance, education - training - apprenticeship, employment, loan support, health and medical care, gender-based violence prevention, family and children. It also unites local and foreign organisations in a network that offers help to returning migrant women and their family members from the Republic of Korea and other countries so they can get access to support services for sustainable reintegration. The establishment of OSSO in Can Tho is strategically meaningful as the city is home to a large number of returning migrant women, said Ha Thi Nga, Chairwoman of the Women’s Union of Vietnam, adding that the union’s Can Tho chapter is offering practical support for Vietnamese women whose spouses are foreigners./.
