Vietnam’s nine-month GDP increases by 4.24%

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the first nine months of this year rose by 4.24% from the same period last year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) announced on September 29. In the third quarter, the country's economic growth rate was estimated at 5.33% compared to the same quarter of 2022. The GSO assessed that although the nine-month growth rate is only higher than those in the same period of 2020 and 2021 in the past 12 years, it showed a positive trend of increasing gradually over the quarters: 3.28% in the first quarter, 4.05% in the second quarter and 5.33% in the third quarter. The second-largest lottery winner in U.S. history has come forward to claim the $1.6 billion prize, but the person's identity may remain a secret for another 90 days, the Florida Lottery said on Wednesday. The Mega Millions jackpot was claimed on Monday, seven weeks after the Aug. 8 drawing, Florida Lottery said in a statement. Florida is one of 45 states plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands to participate in Mega Millions. GDP in the third quarter is estimated to have increased by 5.33 per cent on-year, the lowest growth seen since before 2011, apart from the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. However, this is seen as positive when compared to the growth of 2023's previous quarters, 3.28 per cent in the first, and 4.05 per cent in the second. GDP has increased by 4.24 per cent over the first nine months of the year, also only better than the pandemic period. The government's target growth for 2023 is 6.5 per cent, while last year's was 8.85 per cent. The driving force for the economy continues to be the service sector, which has grown by 6.32 per cent since the start of the year. The industrial and construction sectors still face many issues, with demand falling by 1.65 per cent on-year. Health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City will launch a trial of treating people with mild to moderate depression without using medication, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), the municipal Department of Health has announced.
