Many school trips cancelled following drownings
Many trips for students in Hanoi have been cancelled after a student and parent recently died when visiting a national park. Last Saturday, a group of students and parents from a school in Hanoi visited Xuan Thuy National Park in the northern province of Nam Dinh. While students were catching oysters on the sand, they were swept away by rising tides. As a result, a student and a parent died. As the summer holiday comes, parent associations often hold outdoor trips for their students. However, the Xuan Thuy National Park incident has worried many parents this year, so there have been several cancellations. A woman whose child is studying at a primary school in Nam Tu Liem District said that her child’s class cancelled going camping in Hanoi’s suburbs for safety reasons. Vietnam’s exports, industrial output contract
Vietnam's exports in the first five months of this year fell 11.6% from a year earlier to $136.17 billion, government data showed on Monday, as weakened external demand weighs on its manufacturing-led economy. Its industrial output in the January-May period fell 2% from a year earlier, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said in a report, adding that average consumer prices in the period rose 3.55% from a year earlier. The latest data underlines a slowdown in economic growth for Vietnam, a key regional manufacturing center, due largely to subdued global demand. Vietnam is targeting growth of 6.5% this year, slower than the expansion of 8.02% in 2022. Imports in the first five months of this year fell 17.9% from a year earlier to $126.37 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $9.8 billion, the GSO said. The sharp imports decline could indicate a further slowdown ahead in industrial production, as businesses reduce procurement of raw materials and equipment. Vietnam is a … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s exports, industrial output contract

Builders weigh up resolution methods
Japanese businesses in particular are paying great attention to new construction opportunities, photo Le Toan Many construction contractors are currently dissatisfied with the business hazards they face. According to Hoang Thieu Bao, deputy construction director at Vinaconex, the leading cause of conflicts between investors and contractors is the failure to pay for work on time. According to him, this factor “holds 60-70 per cent of disputes in current building contracts,” originating from investors in projects with state-funded budget and non state-funded budget. “In addition, investors add new requirements that exceed those outlined in the dossiers and contracts. We have encountered this situation frequently that the investor and the design consultant do not anticipate the alterations, which negatively impacts the project implementation process,” Bao said. Uganda enacts harsh anti-LGBTQ law including death penalty
KAMPALA - Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni signed one of the world's toughest anti-LGBTQ laws, including the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality", drawing Western condemnation and risking sanctions from aid donors. Same-sex relations were already illegal in Uganda, as in more than 30 African countries, but the new law goes further. It stipulates capital punishment for "serial offenders" against the law and transmission of a terminal illness like HIV/AIDS through gay sex. It also decrees a 20-year sentence for "promoting" homosexuality. "The Ugandan president has today legalised state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia," said Clare Byarugaba, a Ugandan rights activist. United States President Joe Biden called the move "a tragic violation" of human rights and said Washington would evaluate the implications of the law "on all aspects of U.S. engagement with Uganda." "We are considering additional steps, including the application of sanctions and restriction of entry … [Read more...] about Uganda enacts harsh anti-LGBTQ law including death penalty
