Scene at the meeting (Photo:VNA) Ottawa (VNA) – Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien has met with Canadian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ian Shugart to discuss measures to boosting bilateral culture-sport-tourism ties on the sidelines of the Vietnam Cultural Week in Canada. At the meeting, which took place on September 11, Minister Thien briefed the host on Vietnam’s development achievements and potential for cooperation with Canada. According to him, Vietnam’s economy is estimated to grow 7 percent this year, with good prospects recorded in agriculture, industry, and services. In particular, tourism has grown by 30 percent in three consecutive years, expecting to welcome 16 million tourists in 2018, doubling the figure for 2015. Thien said the number of Canadian visitors to Vietnam is still low, just about 14,000 last year, but is increasing at a relatively high annual rate of 16 percent. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI - Many farmers in the nation's most advanced province in hi-tech agricultural production have a limited understanding what it actually means, experts say. This also limits the province's ability to fully tap the potential for hi-tech agriculture, they add. With its considerable advantages in land and climate conditions, the Central Highlands province of Lâm Đồng is leading the country in developing hi-tech agricultural production. However the province lacks comprehensive "technology planning," leaving its potential for higher productivity and better product quality untapped, says Nguyễn Trúc Bồng Sơn, director of the province's Agriculture Extension Centre. As I was reading a piece of news on the list of world's 61 most literate nations on which Vietnam was not mentioned, I was reminded of an earlier study that listed Vietnam among the five happiest countries in the world. There is no precise answer to the questions of how many Vietnamese read, and how many books they read in a year, yet the general data on the reality of reading in Vietnam is staggering. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI - HCM City athletes were successful on the first day of competitions at the National Swimming Championship in Hà Nội on October 18. National team member Trần Duy Khôi bagged two individual gold medals in the men's 200m backstroke and 400m IM events, with times of 2min 2.52sec and 4:28.61, respectively. Two other titles won by the city went to the men's and women's team 4x100m freestyle relay. With four golds and two silvers, HCM City topped the medal tally. Quảng Bình are second with two titles, followed by An Giang with one. The only gold for An Giang belonged to Vietnamese-American swimmer Lê Nguyễn Paul in the men's 50m breaststroke event, with a time of 28.58sec. He also grabbed a silver in the 200m backstroke pool. Paul is a member of the Việt Nam national team. He first competed for Việt Nam at last year's world championship and then at the Rio Olympics in August.
