New Zealand supports Vietnamese female workers

Female workers in informal sectors in the cities of Da Nang and Hue will receive training support and funding to build back their livelihoods after the economic shock created by COVID-19 outbreaks in their cities. Participants at the event. Photo by the New Zealand Embassy The New Zealand Embassy and ActionAid Vietnam today launched a partnership to "Leave No One Behind in the Struggle Against COVID–19". The project will assist female workers in informal sectors of the economy in Da Nang and Hue. Leaders of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DOFA) of Thua Thien Hue Province, the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (DOLISA) of Da Nang City and the Centre for Community Development and Social Work - CODES participated the launch. The New Zealand Embassy will provide NZD 50,000 (approx. VND 790,000,000) to the project, which aims to reach more than 350 women workers in informal employment as street vendors, junk collectors, or housemaids, over the coming 3 months. Underscoring the importance of this project in the larger programme of support by New Zealand to Vietnam, New Zealand Chargé d'Affaires Joseph Mayhew said, “This is a practical initiative to help ease the economic impacts of COVID-19 and strengthen the resilience of more than 350 women workers, and their families, in Da Nang and Hue’s informal sectors. I believe that supporting women workers in sectors that are hardest hit by the pandemic is a vital component of robust, inclusive, and equitable recovery.” The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted Vietnam's tourism industry, with Da Nang and Thua Thien Hue, the two major international tourism hubs particularly affected. The project includes training on household economic literacy and management, women’s rights and child nutrition. The financial support can be used to purchase food, living essentials or small livelihood options. According to ActionAid Vietnam’s recent research, more than 90% of tourism sector workers lost …

Dual task of Vietnamese sport

>>> V.League 1-2021 to restart in mid-March >>> Vietnamese athletics eye reign defence at SEA Games 31 >>> Two Vietnamese match officials shortlisted to officiate at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Explaining the reason for proffering the honour, football’s world governing body said Vietnam successfully organised the national women’s tournaments in 2020 thanks to its effective control of the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling referees and assistant referees to maintain their professional activities and form as well as to improve their capabilities. Those objective assessments have contributed to affirming the prestige of Vietnamese sports as a whole in terms of not only women’s football but also other events, in the context that the country is well implementing pandemic prevention and control measures to bring society back to normality. Last year, Vietnam’s sport sector successfully organised 148 national competitions, especially the V.League 1-2020 national football championship with stadiums full of spectators, producing great surprise and winning admiration from international friends. In addition, Vietnam sent many teams to compete in 18 international tournaments, earning a haul of medals and five official berths at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. Vietnam maintained a stable training programme for national teams in all sports at the national sport training centre, while opening 16 referee and coach training classes, thus enabling referees, trainers, and athletes to continue improving and honing their professional skills. The aforementioned achievements are prideworthy as many international competitions and also national tournaments in other countries, even developed ones, were either cancelled or suspended for a long time, even for the whole year, significantly affecting the training, competition and professional qualifications of coaches and athletes. International friends have recognised and highly appreciated Vietnam’s COVID-19 …

Vietnam can use diplomatic clout in addressing Myanmar crisis: experts

Myanmar is experiencing political instability after its army seized power and detained government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and much of her party leadership last month. Protests have broken out nationwide and at least 50 people have been killed. Hunter Marston, a PhD researcher with the Australian National University, said that "Vietnam can play a constructive role within ASEAN to encourage Myanmar to return to stability and release political prisoners." He said Vietnam, chair of ASEAN last year, has shown that it values the rule of law, international peace and stability. Tear gas and fire extinguisher gas float around demonstrators during a protest against the military coup in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, March 8, 2021. Photo by Reuters. According to Marston, ASEAN might not really push for a diplomatic solution to Myanmar but the association could play an important role in negotiations with other countries that are capable of forcing the military to negotiate with the elected government and protesters. Among these, the key countries are Japan, Australia, and China. Australia could push for a diplomatic solution because it has some communication with Myanmar’s military and may not adopt widespread sanctions like the U.S. Japan has a long history of providing aid and assistance to Myanmar, despite repeated military coups in the past, so Japan is a trusted partner and a major investor with a lot of influence over the country. China is probably the most important country for Myanmar's military, and is likely to take a more active approach this time to pushing the military towards return to democracy. Marston said he expected to see the key countries act together, sit down with Myanmar's military generals and tell them that they need to restore democracy for peace in the country, failing which these countries will stop trading or investing in the country. "Speaking with one voice, those external parties can influence Myanmar's military thinking." He …
