15-year-old Vietnamese girl dies after drinking alcohol at Tet party
A grade-9 schoolgirl in Yen Bai Province, northern Vietnam has succumbed to her critical condition after drinking liquor at a party during the past Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, local authorities reported on Saturday. The girl, identified only as M., died on Thursday, the last day of the seven-day Tet break, after she attended a drinking party at her friend’s house two days earlier in Ban Cong Commune of the province’s Tram Tau District. As the party was taking place, M. stepped out of the house and then fell down, Hang A Hanh, deputy chairman of the Ban Cong administration, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. The girl was unconscious when being found by her friends and was taken to a local hospital immediately for emergency treatment, but she died two days later at the age of 15, Hanh said. An art performance at the festival (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - A festival was held at the Dong Da Culture Park in Hanoi on January 26 (the fifth day of the first lunar month) to mark the 234th anniversary of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory over Chinese invaders. In 1789, under the leadership of Emperor Quang Trung (also known as national hero Nguyen Hue), Tay Son troops defeated 290,000 Qing invaders, liberating the imperial city of Thang Long and regaining national independence and freedom. Since then, the fifth day of the first lunar month has become the traditional day marking the historic victory. The Ngoc Hoi–Dong Da victory has also gone down in Vietnamese history as an immortal and epic struggle for national construction and defence. January FDI nears USD 1.7 billion
In the month, local authorities granted licenses for 153 new FDI projects worth USD 1.2 billion, up 48.5% in number and 3.1 times in value. Among these projects, those related to wholesale, retail, and repair of automobiles and motorized vehicles accounted for the lion’s share of the total registered sum, at 54.1% or USD 651.9 million. They were followed by those in the processing and manufacturing industry, which together registered 351.2 million in capital. Also in January, 28 foreign countries and territories invested in Vietnam. Singapore was the largest with USD 767.6 million, followed by China with USD 198.2 million. Authorities in Quang Tri Province, located in north-central Vietnam, have granted a certificate of merit together with a cash bonus to the creator of a graceful cat mascot statue, called the ‘Miss Cat’ by netizens, used to celebrate the 2023 Lunar New Year (Tet), which is the Year of the Cat. Dinh Van Tam, a 32-year-old local man, who made the charming artistic work, received the provincial government’s certificate of merit, together with a bonus of VND20 million (US$852), from Ha Si Dong, standing deputy chairman of the Quang Tri administration, on Friday.
