Vietnam strives to join upper middle-income countries
While growth in most regions has slowed down, Vietnam’s economy is recovering strongly with GDP expanding by an average 6.84% during the 2016-2020 period, beating the set target and marking the highest figure in the past three five-year periods. The EVFTA and CPTPP could increase Vietnam’s GDP by 4.3% and 1.3% respectively by 2030. Such an impressive performance will lay a solid foundation for Vietnam to become a upper middle-income country by 2025. Apparel sector urged to develop supporting industry to optimize EVFTA
In 2018, the textile-garment sector posted year-on-year exports growth of more than 16 percent to surpass USD 36 billion, making Vietnam the world’s third biggest exporter of these products, after China and India. Insiders have recommended Vietnam pay attention to developing weaving and other production activities supporting the textile-garment sector. (Photo for illustration) Based on these figures, the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) believes the export target of USD 40 billion for 2019 is achievable, thanks in part to FTAs, including the one with the EU – the second biggest market for Vietnamese textile and garment products.
