Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam's growth accelerated to 4.5 percent in the last quarter of 2020, resulting in an annual growth rate of 2.9 percent - making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world, according to the World Bank (WB). In the January edition of its monthly Vietnam Macro Monitoring, the bank said the country’s industrial production and retail sales continued to expand solidly, with growth rates close to pre-pandemic levels. December 2020 marked another strong performance of merchandise trade, with double digit growth rate in imports (23.1 percent) and exports (17.8 percent), while FDI inflows slowed. Consumer price index remained flat in December 2020, as food prices stabilised, while consumer demand has yet to fully recover from the crisis. Hanoi envisages to become international trade hub
The municipal Department of Industry and Trade plans to lure more investments, and outline support measures and programmes to encourage businesses to land investment in modern distribution and sales systems such as shopping malls and supermarkets. It is striving to develop five regional-level wholesale centres, ten regional-level shopping malls, 12 logistics centres, 68 trade centres, 850 supermarkets and 140 markets. Besides, Hanoi, which houses to 6,000 information technology firms and two IT parks, has taken lead in the country in terms of ICT revenue. GDP growth to reach 5.49 pct. in normal scenario in 2021: Economics Institute
Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam’s 2021 GDP growth is projected at 5.49 percent in the normal scenario, 6.9 percent if the current situation gets better, and 3.48 percent in the worst-case scenario, according to the Vietnam Institute of Economics under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS). The real growth rate will depend on the world economic situation and the capacity to absorb FDI, the “Vietnam Economic Overview 2020: Promoting innovation-based economic growth” conference held by the institute on January 19 heard. VASS President Bui Nhat Quang said the COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected economic growth around the world in 2020, with most major economies posting contractions.
