H’mong ethnic women in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang’s Dong Van Plateau are busy harvesting flax trees at this time of year. Flax trees not only have economic value but also represent a spiritual symbol for H’mong women in Ha Giang. If this kind of tree is grown in a H'mong family, it is a sign that the family has diligent, skillful, and hardworking women. In Dong Van, every H’mong woman knows how to spin fibre, weave cloth and make clothes from the flax trees for their family members. They consider it traditional work and cultural expression that differentiates their costumes from other ethnic groups in the region. The process from growing flax plants to making products using flax fibres includes around 40 steps. After harvest, flax stalks are allowed to dry in the open air for several weeks. 220-metre-long ao dai sets Guinness Vietnam Record
A 220.60-metre long, 250-kilos ao dai has just set a Guinness Vietnam Record for the longest ao dai in Vietnam. According to Vietnamese fashion designer Phuong Ho, the Non Song Gam Voc (Beautiful Homeland) ao dai was made from brocade. It was completed within nearly two months by her team and 20 embroidery artists. "The flap, made from 31 pieces of brocade, features cultural and historic characteristics and landscapes of Vietnam and 3D images of lotus leaves," she said. “It is a great challenge for me and my team to complete the ao dai.” The work is recognised for helping to honour Vietnamese traditional costume, and introduce and promote Vietnam's landscapes. Vietnam joins international student festival at Russian university

The Vietnamese delegation, led by First Secretary for Education at the embassy Nguyen Tuyet Hoa, joined nearly 1,000 students from 20 countries at the event. First held in 2013, the MISiS international student festival has become a large-scale event providing a chance for students from various countries to meet and exchange with each other. The organisation has recently held a workshop to introduce the project to relevant stakeholders, focusing on the role of flood-based agriculture, the value chain for flood crops such as lotus and, in particular, the added value that can be developed from lotus silk. The project's goal is to promote flood-based livelihoods using lotus cultivation to support flood retention areas and restore some of the four billion cubic metres of water retention that was lost between 2000 and 2011 in the Mekong Delta.
