Three dead, eight missing in northern Vietnam flooding
The northern highlands province of Hoa Binh reported three deaths: Dinh Thi Nguyet, 35, Ha Tam Uyen, 4, and Nguyen Minh Hieu, 10, were swept away by floodwaters and their bodies found later. Of the eight people listed missing, also swept away by floods, two were from Hoa Binh, one from Phu Tho, two in Lao Cai and four in Nam Dinh Province. The four Nam Dinh victims are a 35-year-old woman, her 8-year-old daughter and her two nieces, aged 11 and 12. They went to a river at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. When the three children entered the river to swim, they were swept away. The woman tried to jump in to save them, only to be swept away as well. Power shortage worries increase hunger for coal
Cao Son Coal, the company with the largest mining output in Vietnam, on July 19 announced to improve and expand the capacity of the Cao Son coal mine in Cam Pha in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh, to meet high production requirements. Coal mining companies are increasing output to deal with power generation shortages, Le Toan The mine has total reserves of almost 52 million tonnes, with a designed capacity of about 4.5 million tonnes per year. By upgrading the reserves, Cao Son’s coal mine is expected to complete a record high mining output of 6.78 million tonnes in 2022. Phan Quoc Viet, director of Cao Son Coal, said, “We have mobilised equipment to maximise the exploitation of raw coal at the Cao Son mine. Hanoi to spend nearly $3.9ml on overseas training for public officials
The capital city will give priority to young cadres or female cadres. Hanoi has made a plan to spend nearly VND90 billion (US$3.9 million) to train public servants in developed countries, according to the municipal People’s Committee. The committee said early this week that its overseas training project will focus on refreshing and enhancing professional knowledge and skills for around 500 cadres, civil servants, and public employees from the city’s six departments during the 2022-25 period. These departments need to make detailed plans for their qualified employees to take such refresher courses in Australia, Germany, France, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the US and among others, the committee added.
