Outstanding tariff preferences The British Embassy in Vietnam has forecast that Vietnam will save about US$151 million in tariffs from the deal, while the UK stands to save around US$36 million. Although the UKVFTA took effect at a time when the pandemic was ravaging the two countries, bilateral trade still reached US$6.6 billion in the pact’s first year. In fact, 65 percent of all tariffs have already been eliminated from UK-Vietnam trade. In the first six years of the deal, the UK will eliminate 99.2 percent of tariff lines on Vietnam’s imports. This is higher than the terms of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) with 70.3 percent tariff elimination. Folding bikes allowed on Hanoi’s sky train
Folding bikes are compact and light and do not take up too much space. The management board of Hanoi's Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, the first in Vietnam, has allowed passengers to take folding bikes on trains, according to Vu Hong Truong, general director of Hanoi Metro Company, operator of the system. The move is aimed at providing commuters with more convenient and easier access to the public transport system because this is the only metro route in Hanoi for now, Truong said, adding that it has yet to be interconnected with other modes of public transportation. “Cat Linh-Ha Dong is the first metro line to be put into operation in Vietnam, thus, improvements still need to be made during the operation of the system. After a life spent hiding, Vietnamese burn victim steps into the spotlight with bakery
After suffering severe burns across his face as a child, Ngo Quy Hai, a 27-year-old from Vietnam’s Central Highlands, has managed to shed the physical and emotional burden of his injury and become the successful owner of Sunhouse Coffee – a well-known pastry shop in Plei Kan Town, Ngoc Hoi District, Kon Tum Province. Hai burned his face when he was just a few months old after falling out of a walker and landing face first on a boiling pot of porridge. His parents rushed him to Children’s Hospital No. 1 in Ho Chi Minh City where he received medical treatment for almost two years. While doctors at the hospital were able to save Hai’s life, his injuries left him so scary that other children refused to play with him.
