Vietnamese officials and diplomats have attended the ‘Look East’ Conference in the Indian city of Kolkata. The event, which opened on March 27, was attended by many senior Indian officials, the leaders of organisations, and representatives from several big groups and sectors in India. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Governor of the state of West Bengal, Josinder Jaswant Singh, emphasised that the conference was to promote the implementation of India’s ‘Look East’ policy, with a focus on increasing the trade turnover between northeastern India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Vietnamese Trade Counsellor in India, Nguyen Son Ha, introduced the investment opportunities open to Indian businesses, especially after India recognised Vietnam’s market economy in 2009 and the two countries agreed to establish the strategic partnership in 2007.
