In early September, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) lowered anti-dumping duties on frozen tra fish filets from Vietnam following its latest preliminary conclusion. The Federal Register, the daily journal of the US government, published the preliminary results of the 19th anti-dumping duty administrative review (POR19) by DOC on Vietnam’s frozen tra fish filets exported to the US in the August 1, 2021 - July 31, 2022 period. Accordingly, the US authority determined that two Vietnamese companies, Vinh Hoan Corporation and Can Tho Import Export Seafood Joint Stock Company (Caseamex), which were selected for individual examination as mandatory respondents, will enjoy a tax rate of 0 USD per kilo and 0.14 USD per kilo, respectively. Tuna exports rise to year’s highest levels
VASEP said there were some changes in the export patterns in August. After declining steadily, exports to the U.S. increased by 2% bolstered by a 24% jump in shipments of canned tuna. But exports for the year-to-date were 45% down from 2022 at US$208 million. Exports to the EU saw a 37% surge, including a 45-fold rise in shipments to Italy. Smaller markets like Thailand and the Philippines also bought more tuna. Shipments to members of the CPTPP trade deal like Japan, Canada and Mexico fell by 53%, 49% and 14%. Vietnam’s cashew ‘capital’ takes action to comply with EU’s anti-deforestation regulations
The regulation, approved by the European Commission (EC) on May 16, 2023, is the latest by the EU regarding green, sustainable development, specifically deforestation-free agricultural products. It sets mandatory due diligence rules for all operators and traders who place, make available or export the following commodities from the EU market: palm oil, cattle, wood, coffee, cocoa, rubber and soy. The rules also apply to a number of derived products such as chocolate, furniture, printed paper, and selected palm oil-based derivatives (used for example as components in personal care products). They will be applicable to most companies from December 2024. Micro-enterprises and small-medium enterprises would have an additional six months to comply with the regulation's requirements.
