By Binh Nguyen - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC - U.S. scientists and professors have been in Vietnam for almost 10 days to interview and select candidates for the 2012 Fellowship Program in the U.S., organized by the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). The VEF, which is an initiative of the U.S. Congress, said up to 45 new fellows would be selected from 76 qualified finalists that the U.S. scientists and professors had interviewed before they complete their Vietnam visit on Friday as planned for this oral exams as well as presentations at Vietnamese universities and institutes. Lynne A. McNamara, executive director of the VEF, told reporters in HCMC that the new fellows would begin graduate programs in the fields of sciences, engineering, mathematics, medicine and technology at top research universities and institutions in the U.S. in autumn next year. 600 logs of rare timber seized Krong Trai forest rangers have seized nearly 600 logs of giang huong (pterocarpus pedatus pierre) timber, illegally stored at a local house in central Phu Yen Province. Nguyen Tien Dat, 41, had been storing the timber and failed to show legal documents to prove the stockpile's origin. It is the largest amount of timber found to be illegally stored at a local house in the province so far. The case is currently under investigation. NFSC assesses Jan-Sep economic performance Though economic indicators showed improvements, more efforts are still needed for attaining the 5.5% GDP growth target, according to the National Financial Supervisory Committee (NFSC). The NFSC reported that economic production bounced back slowly. Inventory levels of industrial manufacturing dropped sharply and industrial production index constantly rose, soaring 5.4% in September. However, import growth rates of raw materials remained modest. Total demand was relatively weak in which the January-September retail sales of goods and services increased by 12.5% against the same period last year. GDP growth pace in Q3 was higher than forecast thanks to the Government's efforts to maintain macro-economic stability and prioritize inflation curbing. Nevertheless, the economy still faces challenges including inefficient credit freeze and weak consumption demand which are hampering production.
